Gretchen Rubin: Watch Out for the 'I'm Right; You're Wrong' Conversation

A few days ago, I posted about a phenomenon I describe as "oppositional conversational style" (OCS for short), and I've been flabbergasted by the heated response.

I thought I'd identified some obscure, rare pattern of human interaction, but it turns out that lots of people had already identified this kind of interaction.

A person with "oppositional conversational style" is a person who, in conversation, disagrees with and corrects whatever you say. Maybe in a friendly way, maybe in a belligerent way, but their remarks are framed in opposition to whatever you say.

I was fascinated to read people's comments. I learned several things.

First, people recognize this pattern easily. OCS, it turns out, is a widespread phenomenon.

Second, people find it tiresome to be on the receiving end of OCS. To be repeatedly told "I'm right; you're wrong," in every context, gets annoying.

Third, at least some people who practice OCS recognize it in themselves, and they think there's value to this kind of exchange. They engage with others in this way because they find it fun to argue, or they want to get facts exactly correct, or because they want to make clear that there's another side to an argument (even if they don't particularly believe in that side of the argument, they want to explore it).

Fourth, OCS is sometimes related to the Tigger vs. Eeyore distinction. OCS seems associated with Eeyoredom, though not everyone who exhibits OCS is an Eeyore.

I think it's helpful to watch out for the "oppositional conversational style." Sometimes, just being able to identify something that's bugging you somehow lessens the annoyance. Instead of reacting to the exchange unthinkingly, you realize, "Oh, I'm in the presence of the oppositional conversational style! How very interesting!"

And for those who use the oppositional conversational style, it's helpful to recognize your pattern of behavior -- and to recognize its likely effects on others. You might not care if you're annoying people, or maybe you do. Whether or not you agree that people should get annoyed, it seems that they are getting annoyed.

Do you recognize oppositional style in someone you know -- or in yourself? What's your reaction to this way of communicating?

Switched On: The fight, the fancy, and the future

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

DNP Switched On The fight, the fancy, and the future

While Microsoft's motivations in announcing Surface differed meaningfully from Google's when it announced the Nexus One, the Redmond company took advantage of the precedent that Google set in releasing a device that competed with those of licensees. At Google I/O, it was Google's turn to again approach the hardware market, this time with three devices that took the company into new categories and targeted different competitors. The trajectory of each product reveals clues about the company's direction.

Wallace Spearmon wins 200 with no controversy

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) ? Wallace Spearmon took another step toward erasing the bad memories of his disqualification at the Beijing Olympics, overcoming a slow start to win the 200-meter final in 19.82 seconds at the U.S. trials.

"That's definitely something that's been on my mind since 2008," he said. "It's hard to make one Olympic team, go and make the final, step on the line when you thought you had a medal, do about 300 meters of the victory lap and have to live with that."

Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh can probably relate.

Spearmon's victory at Hayward Field on Sunday ? and his chance for redemption at the London Games after losing the bronze medal because of a lane violation in Beijing ? was overshadowed by a runoff between Felix and Tarmoh that was originally set for Monday afternoon.

That winner-take all race to settle a third-place tie in the 100 for the final spot on the U.S. Olympic team was put into limbo late Sunday when Tarmoh began having second thoughts about agreeing to the runoff.

Tarmoh's agent, Kimberly Holland, told The Associated Press she would not run, and USA Track and Field confirmed Tarmoh's withdrawal on Monday morning.

Felix and Tarmoh finished in a dead heat in the 100 more than a week ago behind winner Carmelita Jeter and Tianna Madison, putting the team for the event in limbo. Track officials had no policy in place to resolve it but the next day devised a tiebreaker that included the options of a runoff or a coin flip.

The decision was put off eight days to allow Felix and Tarmoh to focus on the 200, which Felix handily won Saturday night. Tarmoh finished fifth.

On Sunday morning, the athletes got together with track officials and decided on the runoff that Tarmoh later reconsidered.

Wearing his sunglasses, Spearmon rebounded from his shaky start and finished the 200 well in front of runner-up Maurice Mitchell and Isiah Young.

"If I didn't make the team this year, that would've been on my mind the rest of my life ? the chance I could've had," Spearmon said. "Being able to go back and make my second Olympic team and have a chance at redemption, I don't take my second chances lightly. I'm going to go out there and leave it all on the track.'"

Spearmon was the obvious favorite in the field, which was somewhat diluted when sprinters Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gay decided to pass after securing spots on the Olympic team in the 100. And reigning Olympic 200 bronze medalist Walter Dix didn't run because of a lingering hamstring injury that was apparent in the 100.

Dix's only option for making it to London will be as a member of the 400 relay team.

Shortly after Spearmon claimed his third U.S. title in the event, good friend Usain Bolt ran the 200 at the Jamaican trials, finishing second to Yohan Blake. The trio of Blake, Bolt and Spearmon instantly became the favorites going into London.

In other events Sunday, defending outdoor champion Lashinda Demus won the women's 400 hurdles in 53.98, joining runner-up Georganne Moline and third-place finisher T'Erea Brown on the Olympic team.

On the men's side, Michael Tinsley won the 400 hurdles in 48.33, beating reigning Olympic champion Angelo Taylor and defending Olympic silver medalist Kerron Clement. Bershawn Jackson, the defending Olympic bronze medalist, fell into the finish but ended up fourth.

"Not many people make it to their fourth Olympic team, so this is something that I really wanted to do," Taylor said. "I knew the competition I was facing. My main goal was just to stay healthy, and goal No. 2 was just to make the team."

Leo Manzano won the men's 1,500 in 3 minutes, 35.75 seconds, followed by former Oregon Ducks teammates Matthew Centrowitz and Andrew Wheating.

"I knew I needed to stay calm, stay smooth," Manzano said after becoming a two-time Olympian. "There were some times I kind of got caught up, but I just needed to stay calm, bring it back around and just shoot for home."

Morgan Uceny won the women's 1,500 in 4:04.59, earning a place on the team with runner-up Shannon Rowbury and third-place finisher Jenny Simpson. Simpson has the American record in the 3,000 steeplechase, but switched to the 1,500 and is the reigning world champion in the event.

"The hardest thing about the trials that separates it from any other race you run in your life is that your emotions can slip away from you," Simpson said. "On final stretch, I just felt this overwhelming relief. I didn't even care my time or my place. I was just so happy the three of us were going to make it."

Brittney Reese won her fifth straight U.S. title in the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 5 1/2 inches. The two-time world champion will be joined in London by runner-up Chelsea Hayes and Janay DeLoach.

Brittany Borman won the javelin with a throw of 201-9. Kara Patterson was second at 196-2, but third-place finisher Kimberly Hamilton did not have the Olympic "A'' standard needed to qualify for the games and the third spot on the U.S. team went to fourth-place finisher Rachel Yurkovich.

Maria Michta won the 20,000-meter race walk in 1:34:53.33 for the lone spot on the team because no one had the "A'' standard.

Curcumin Could Preserve Walking Ability Among Spinal Cord Injury Patients

A curry spice may do more than just add some flavor to your dishes -- it could also help to preserve the ability to walk in people who've had a spinal cord injury, according to a new animal study.

Published in the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine, researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles, found that consuming lots of omega-3 fatty acids -- which have a myriad of health benefits, in their own rite -- and curcumin -- found in the curry spice turmeric -- is linked with maintenance of brain functioning and reparation of nerve cells after damage to the spinal cord.

"While surgery can relieve the pressure and prevent further injury, it can't repair damage to the cells and nerve fibers," study researcher Dr. Langston Holly, an associate professor of neurosurgery at the UCLA School of Medicine, said in a statement. "We wanted to explore whether dietary supplementation could help the spinal cord heal itself."

The study was done in rats who all had something similar to the human cervical myelopathy, which is a spine-related disorder that affects walking. One group of rats was fed a diet high in sugar and saturated fats (mimicking a Western diet), while the second group of rats was fed the same diet but with docosahexaenoic acid (found in omega-3s) and curcumin. The third group of rats was just served a regular rat diet.

Then, the researchers examined how the rats walked week after week. Even after as little as three weeks, researchers found that rats that just ate the saturated fat and sugar diet had more walking problems than the other rats, while rats with the DHA and curcumin had fewer walking problems after six weeks of observation.

Researchers also wanted to see how the diets may have impacted the actual spinal cords. They found that the rats fed the saturated fat and sugar diet had more evidence of damage to the cell membrane. Meanwhile, rats that were fed the DHA and curcumin only had evidence of as much damage as the rats fed the regular rat diet.

In 2010, UCLA researchers published a study in the journal Molecular Cancer Therapeutics showing that curcumin could actually make chemotherapy more powerful against tumors in the head and neck, MyHealthNewsDaily reported.

Specifically, curcumin seemed to enhance cisplatin, which is the chemo drug used to treat those specific cancers, according to MyHealthNewsDaily.

And earlier this year, researchers from Chiang Mai University found that curcumin may help to lower the risk of heart attack among recent heart-bypass patients when taken alongside the normal drug treatment regimen, Reuters reported. That study was published in the American Journal of Cardiology.

Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes Divorce: Scientology Fears Prompted Her to File, Blindside Actor

Katie Holmes surprised many by filing for divorce from Tom Cruise, but the apparent reason behind her decision would likely be anyone's first guess.

Scientology.

Sources say the Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes divorce is happening for precisely that reason, specifically her concern that Suri will be introduced to it.

Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes Pic

Their daughter is now six, the age where Scientology will begin to be a major part of her life, and Katie fears Suri will be dragged in too deep.

Holmes has never fully committed to Scientology, TMZ reports, despite her ties with the church and more than five years of marriage to Tom.

Many observers felt their marriage would never work for this reason; Katie respected Tom's beliefs, but raising their child his way a different story.

As she's grown, the couple had been arguing over Suri with greater frequency, and Katie eventually filed for divorce to protect the little girl.

A key detail in the Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes divorce filing was the location in which it was filed: The 33-year-old actress made if official in New York.

She does not want Tom, 49, to control decisions relating to Suri's religion, and feels N.Y. is far more likely to grant her request for sole custody.

Holmes reportedly is not after money - she had plenty before they got married and there's a prenup in place anyway - just little Suri Cruise.

Tom deeded their NYC apartment to Katie last year, reportedly for tax purposes; she's using it to establish residence, and file for divorce, in the city.

What is Scientology and is Katie right to be running scared? You will surely have plenty to say about it in the comments, but we leave you with this:

Here's Cruise describing Scientology and what the faith means to him in a video leaked in 2008. Clearly, the man takes it very seriously ...
