Montreal Mayor Michael Applebaum said he was personally threatened by the head of Montreal?s police union because the city has refused to allow officers to work a three-day workweek.

Applebaum produced an email sent from Yves Francoeur?s head of communications Thursday to his press aide stating ?tell the mayor it?s not the civil servants who will have trouble with us on their back, it?s the mayor.?

Stop the cancellation of the three-day workweek and Francoeur will thank the mayor publicly and ?the episode will be closed? the email states.

Applebaum said he also spoke to Francoeur Friday morning and the head of the police brotherhood told him he had till 6 p.m. to change course on the program or he would be personally attacked, without specifying what form those attacks would take.

Applebaum said the city had tried the three-day workweek as a pilot program, but in evaluations, 30 out of 33 police commanders recommended it be scrapped as it was not working. Montreal police chief Marc Parent and the head of human resources for the city concurred. If the police want to dispute the issue, they have the right, Applebaum said, saying he understood they have families and difficult jobs. But it has to be done through proper channels and not by threatening the mayor of a metropolis.

?I remain convinced Montreal taxpayers, most of whom work five-day weeks, will back me on this,? he said.

Denmark announces businesses are new growth market for solar energy

The upcoming conference ?The Solar Future: Denmark? will focus on the potential for solar energy in Denmark. Experts expect that larger companies and businesses will become a new growth market.

After the explosive growth of solar energy in Denmark in 2012 under the favourable framework conditions for private households, experts now see a new growth market for photovoltaic (PV) systems: large companies and businesses.

"The government's new rules are more interesting for companies then for private households," says Esben Christensen, Head of New Markets at European Energy, a Danish company that develops, finances and builds solar and wind farms. The new rules, which were introduced in 2012, make it most worthwhile to use solar power at the same time as it is produced. Any excess power must namely be bought back for 2.20 kroner (30 Eurocents) per kWh.

"Companies with large office buildings can use the power that is produced on their own roof tops right away, while private homeowners typically work five days a week and are at home on the weekends. This market will therefore grow quickly in the next few years," says Esben Christensen, who at the international conference in Copenhagen will give a presentation on the potential of the Danish market for PV systems. However, he points out that the potential development will depend on how the new rules should be interpreted.

"We are awaiting ministerial guidelines," he says.

A great example of a large rooftop project is the head office Topdanmark, Denmark?s second largest insurance company in Ballerup. It is Northern Europe's largest rooftop solar power installation for commercial purposes with 3,042 solar panels (5.000 m2) and an annual capacity of 745 kWp. Their production corresponds to almost the annual power consumption of 200 households.

The strong political and social commitment to renewable energy in Denmark will be illustrated at the conference by the example of the forward-looking town of Skive, which has the country's largest municipal PV.

"In total we have around 80 major PV installations on almost all our municipal buildings like the city hall, the nursing home, schools and day care centers. When the project is completed this summer, we will have about 1.45 MWp solar power," says Michael Petersen, local team leader for energy savings. Michael Petersen, the moving spirit behind this project, is also one of the speakers at the conference in March.

Although Denmark has the highest electricity price in Europe because of the high taxes, energy consultant Anders Houm?ller from Houmoller Consulting in Fredericia, emphasizes that it was not the high electricity price in Denmark that boosted the great interest in solar energy.
"The interest in ?green electricity? can be traced back to the public debate in the 70'-80's when Denmark declined nuclear power. Instead we built coal fired power plants, which have a relatively high CO2 emission. Already at that time there was a great interest in renewable energy in our country," says Anders Houm?ller, who at the upcoming conference will give a presentation on the development of electricity prices in Denmark.

Mini microscopes see inside the brains of mice

Mini microscopes embedded into the brains of genetically engineered mice are providing researchers a window onto the inner workings of the mammalian mind.

The tool provides an unprecedentedly wide field of view on the mouse brain ? in one mouse, for example, the team recorded the firing of more than 1,000 individual neurons ? and it can record for weeks on end, allowing scientists to study how brain activity evolves over time.

?That kind of question, the time-lapse question, has not been previously examined in freely behaving mice,? Mark Schnitzer, an associate professor of biology and applied physics at Stanford University, told NBC News.

He and colleagues described the tool earlier this month in the journal Nature Neuroscience and have launched a startup company, Inscopix Inc., to market the mini microscopes to researchers who study neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer?s and other brain disorders.

Fluorescing neurons
The mini microscopes are mounted into little circles removed from the mouse cranium. They wear them around like a hat, Schnitzer explained.

Neurons in the mice?s hippocampus, a region of the brain associated with spatial memory, are genetically engineered to express green fluorescence protein, especially in the presence of calcium. When a neuron fires, the cell naturally floods with calcium ions, and thus fluoresces more intensely.

The mini microscope is connected to a camera chip, which routes images of neurons fluorescing to a computer screen. The result is a near real-time video of the mouse?s brain activity as it runs around a small enclosure. Check it out in the video below.

To the untrained eye, the firing neurons appear chaotic and random, but the researchers discerned a clear pattern. Specific neurons fire in association with specific areas in the enclosure.

?The individual neurons seem to have preferences regarding the mouse?s location in space,? Schnitzer explained. ?This neuron might fire when the mouse is over here and that neuron might fire when the mouse is over there.?

Disease studies
While this spatial mapping was known from previous studies, the ability to image many hundreds of neurons at once and for long enough to watch the brain evolve is novel, Schnitzer said. The tool may come in handy for researchers studying the evolution of diseases such as Alzheimer?s.

For example, the National Institutes of Health has supported the development of mouse models of human brain diseases, Schnitzer explained. Using the tool, researchers could compare the evolution of a healthy mouse with one known to have a model of Alzheimer?s.

This might, Schnitzer said, allow researchers to ?see maybe what early symptoms look like before it is even apparent at the behavioral level. And one could imagine providing therapeutics and seeing the effects of those down to the resolution of single cells.?
