?LARGEMOUTH BASS fishing is reported as generally good. Night fishing is in full swing and producing many fish. Try black jitterbugs and surface poppers. Areas to try include Bantam Lake, Winchester Lake, Mansfield Hollow Reservoir, Quonnipaug Lake, Wononskopomuc Lake (12 fish for one angler), Candlewood Lake (20 fish for one boat), Lower Bolton Lake, Pattaconk Lake (20 fish on one trip), Lake Saltonstall (catches include a 5.5 lb bass), Halls Pond, Hopeville Pond, Griggs Pond, Bigelow Pond, Lake McDonough, Cedar Lake, Tollgate Pond, Pierrepont Pond, Mamanasco Lake, Lake Housatonic, Highland Lake, Pachaug Pond, Ball Pond, West Hill Pond, Silver Lake, Bashan Lake, Lake Lillinonah, Mudge Pond, Hatch Pond, Park Pond, Wood Creek Pond, Uncas Lake, Bishop Pond, Rogers Lake, & Lake Hayward. SMALLMOUTH BASS are reported at Lake Housatonic, Lake Lillinonah, Candlewood Lake, Lake McDonough, Coventry Lake, Squantz Pond, Rainbow Reservoir, Highland Lake and Mashapaug Lake. River smalllie action is good, with reports from Farmington River (Tariffville), Naugatuck River (Seymour area) and the upper Housatonic River (excellent action). Tournament angler reports are from Candlewood Lake (good, bags include a number of 3-4 lb fish) and Lake Zoar (fair).

NORTHERN PIKE fishing is reported to be slow in Winchester Lake and Bantam Lake (fish to 31?) and good at Lake Lillinonah.

Some WALLEYE are being reported from Coventry Lake and Batterson Park Pond.
Excellent CALICO BASS action on small minnows is reported at Bantam Lake, Park Pond and Silver Lake.
CARP action was excellent for anglers fishing the banks of the Farmington River. Euro-style brought several (5 to mid 30?s lbs) fish to the swim. Boilies & method with pop-ups & hair rigs did the trick.

CATFISH ? Summer catfishing is slowing in the recently stocked areas. Good fishing may be found at: Bunnells Pond (Bridgeport), Lake Wintergreen (Hamden/New Haven), Black Pond (Middlefield) and Silver Lake (Meriden).
PANFISH this season has been very good. Now is the time to get the family out and experience this fast-paced action. Target the shallows with bobbers and worms, grubs or small shiners. Small spinners and jigs have been very productive as well. Small local ponds are often great for panfish, for bigger waters try Quinebaug Lake, Red Cedar Lake, Mashapaug Lake, Pierrepont Pond, Park Pond, Mount Tom Pond, Griggs Pond, Lake Winfield, Bishop Pond, Winchester Lake, Tyler Lake, Mamanasco Lake, Rogers Lake, Lake Hayward, Black Pond (Woodstock), Hatch Pond, Black Pond (Middlefield) and Mudge Pond.

CONNECTICUT RIVER ? The river remains warm, and flows continue to be low. Flows could increase some by the weekend due to forecast storms (depending on the rainfall amounts in the watershed north of CT). NORTHERN PIKE fishing has been slow. Good numbers of SMALLMOUTH BASS are being caught north of Hartford (near the confluence of the Farmington River and around Kings Island) and below Hartford in the Salmon River area. Fair to good fishing reported for LARGEMOUTH BASS from Hartford to Haddam/East Haddam, catches include a number of fish in the 3-5 lb range, and there?s been some good action on ?shorts? (fish less than 12 inches) to keep anglers busy. CATFISH are being taken on fresh/frozen cut bait. Target shallow areas near deep drop-offs, plenty of 5-7 lb fish are being caught. CARP fishing has been good in the lower river during the right tide.

TROUT

Lakes & Ponds ? Early morning anglers are still boating some good fish, with reports from Mashapaug Lake, Coventry Lake (evening), Crystal Lake (riggers at 15-20 feet), Lake Wononskopomuc, East Twin Lake (try 30-40 feet of water), Highland Lake (center basin; early/late), Lake McDonough, Beach Pond (deep trolling streamers) and West Hill Pond (3-4 colors).

Rivers & streams ? Although recent rains did refresh flows in some areas, many rivers and streams throughout the state remain well below typical summer levels. With the possibility of intense thunder storms in the forecast, flows may increase rapidly in some areas. Anglers should note that smaller streams and tributaries typically return to fishable levels quickest. Early and late in the day are peak fishing times during this time of the year. Anglers are reporting some action from the West Branch Farmington River, Farmington River, Housatonic River (early/late) and Hammonasset River.

Farmington River ? Trout fishing remains good and flows (West Branch) continue to be clear and moderate (259 cfs at Riverton, plus an additional 12 cfs from the Still River). Morning West Branch water temperatures are in the mid 60?s?F.
Current hatches/patterns include Ephemerella needhami (#22-26, early morning), Leadwing Coachman (Isonychia bicolor, #10-14, fast water, evening), Blue Wing Olives (Drunella sps., #18-24, mid-late afternoon to evening), Sulphurs duns (Epeorus vitreus, #14-20, morning; afternoon to early evening for spinners; hatch is coming to an end), Rusty Spinner (#20), Caddis (tan #18-24, all day; green #18/22, evening), Midges (#20-32, morning), Black Ants (#14-18, mid day in fast water), Black Beetles (#8-10, mid day), Flying Ants (#18-24, mid day, when windy/humid) and Golden Drake (Anthopotamus <http://www.troutnut.com/hatch/829/Mayfly-Anthopotamus-Golden-Drakes> distinctus, #10-14, late evening).

Housatonic River ? Morning temperatures (TMA) are currently in the upper 60?s rising to the mid 70?s ?F. Flows remain low, currently 182 cfs at Falls Village and 297 cfs at Gaylordsville. Current weather forecasts include the possibility of intense thunder storms and periods of heavy precipitation tonight and Friday, anglers can call the FirstLight Housatonic River Flow Information automated phone (1-888-417-4837) for up-to-date flow status. Current conditions (warm temperatures and low flows) can be especially stressful to trout, so anglers should consider switching to smallmouth bass (these conditions are near ideal for smallie fishing). Those targeting trout need to take extreme care when handling trout they plan to release.
Insect hatches/patterns include White Wulff (#10-12, evening- the white fly hatch is heavy now), Blue Wing Olive (#16-18, early morning; spinner fall in evening), Leadwing Coachman (#10-12 evening), Light Cahill (#10-12, evening), and assorted caddis (#14-18, early morning & evening). Terrestrial season is here, try Black/Cinnamon Ants (#18-22, mid day in fast water), Black Beetles (#14-18, mid day) and Flying Ants (#18-22, mid day, when windy/humid). Don?t forget streamers (morning & evening), patterns to try include White Zonkers, Wooly Buggers, Muddlers, Micky Finn, Grey or Black Ghosts (#4-10). The Dobson fly is active and anglers can use a black woolly bugger to mimic it.

Anglers are reminded that the thermal refuge areas on the Housatonic, Naugatuck and Shetucket Rivers are closed to fishing as of June 15. These areas will reopen on September 1. There is no fishing within 100 feet of the mouths of posted tributaries to these rivers.

NOTES & NOTICES:

* WYASSUP LAKE (impossible to launch) remains drawn down for dam repairs.

*Anglers on the SALMON RIVER should be aware that the current work in the Lyman Viaduct (Colchester) reconstruction project on Dickinson Creek, which includes filling in a large scour hole below the twin culverts and restoring fish passage (after 50+ years), may at times cause some noticeable turbidity, including in the Salmon River downstream of Dickinson Creek.

* GREEN FALLS RESERVOIR has been drawn down 15 inches to facilitate ongoing dam repairs in the Pachaug River system. The pond remains open to fishing and car top boating access, although the swimming area has been closed.

*LAKE ZOAR ? A water ski clinic for the disabled is scheduled for Saturday, July 28 in the upper end of Lake Zoar. These events run from 9 am to 4 pm, and boaters are asked to take care when passing through this area (marked by buoys) of the lake, and avoid interfering with the event.

* CANDLEWOOD LAKE ? The swim portion of a triathlon will be conducted from 7:00 am to 8:00 am in the far northern end of the Sherman arm from the Sherman Town Park to approximately ? mile south of the park.

TIPS & TRICKS FOR CATFISHING

BAIT CHOICES ? If big channels are your target, use cut baits. Cut baits are pieces of sliced baitfish. These baits attract cats over long distances. Use oily fish when possible.

SMALL TO MIDSIZE RIVER HOTSPOTS ? Just below each set of rapids, at the head of each pool, fast water carves the channel deeper, creating a depression or hole. This is the deepest part of the pool and the area where channel catfish are most likely to be found. Channel cats wait in ambush for food to pass by.

BIG-RIVER HOTSPOTS ? Big-river channel cats feed and rest near structure that breaks or reduces the current. These include rock, gravel and sandbars, deep holes and cover in outside bends, bottom holes or depressions, bottom humps and deep holes at tributary junctions.

POND CATS ? Since these ponds are small, anglers have fewer problems pinpointing actively feeding fish. Focus your attention on deep-water areas where channel cats usually stay during daylight hours and during the temperature extremes; near the mouths of feeder streams; near the outside (deeper) edges of green aquatic vegetation; and near rockpiles, stumps, logs, trees, holes, humps and points.

STILL-FISHING TIPS ? The area just below a dam provides some of the best action. Fishing near fallen trees at the head of a deep pool on an outside bend of the river also can lead to good catches. When still-fishing from a boat position your boat for best access to the structure you?ve chosen.

DRIFT-FISHING ? Drift-fishing helps the cats find your bait. You can drift-fish in a boat or drift-fish your bait below a bobber. When in a boat, use a drift rig comprised of a bottom-bouncer sinker placed on the line above a barrel swivel to which is attached a 2- to 3-foot leader with a 3/0 hook on the end. When wading or bank-fishing on a river, drift your bait beneath a bobber. Drift by one side of a hole, then down the other and finally right down the middle. Keep your rod tip high when drifting a bobber rig. This keeps most of the line off the water, resulting in better rig control and hooksets.

HOOKS ? Be sure your hooks are needle-sharp. Second, instead of burying your hook in bait, leave the barb exposed. Catfish won?t notice. More hookups will result.

RODS ? Use long rods (7 feet-plus) when bank-fishing. These offer several advantages, including increased casting distance, more ?reach? for working rigs properly around cover, better bait control and more hook-setting and fighting power.

NIGHT BITE ? When night-fishing, know when a cat takes your bait. Helpful products include: night bobbers (special floats with a light on top powered by a cyalume light stick or lithium battery); a 12-volt ultraviolet light, which makes fluorescent monofilament glow, allowing you to see line movements; rods with glow-in-the-dark or fluorescent tips; rod bells, which clip on and ring when a catfish shakes your pole; and electronic bite indicators, which attach to your line and emit an audible signal when a catfish runs with your bait.

SUMMER FLOUNDER (fluke) fishing has really slowed down and is rated just fair to good. Deeper water (90+ ft) appears to be your best bet for hooking a doormat. Fluke spots include Fishers Island (Isabella Beach, Wilderness Point), off the Stonington breakwater, mouth of the Mystic River to Groton Long Point, Thames River channel, Two Tree Island Channel, Black Point/Niantic Bay, Long Sand Shoal, Westbrook-Clinton area, Falkner Island area, outer New Haven Harbor, and off the mouth off the Housatonic River.

SCUP (porgy) fishing is good to excellent on the major reefs. Fish measuring 17 inches in length have been reported.

BLACK SEA BASS fishing around slack tide over hard rocky bottom and wrecks in deep water is your best bet in LIS. On the other hand, Block Island Sound has been red hot!

HICKORY SHAD fishing remains hit or miss in the lower Connecticut River.

STRIPED SEAROBIN fishing has been real good with some good sized fish being caught. An angler targeting fluke near the Housatonic River caught a trophy robin that weighed in at over 4 lbs!

BLUE CLAW CRABBING remains good in the tidal creeks of Stonington to Mystic, Thames River area, Niantic, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, Westbrook, and Clinton to New Haven.

SPECIAL NOTE: During the summer months, anglers may accidentally hook up with a sandbar shark or a sand tiger shark. Sandbar and sand tiger sharks are protected and must be released unharmed. LONDON?A mysterious woman in red has caused an international incident at the London Olympics.

Indian officials are mystified ? and miffed ? after an unknown young woman managed to march with the country?s athletes and officials during the opening ceremony Friday night.

Games organizers on Sunday downplayed security concerns around the unscripted moment, saying the interloper was a ceremony cast member and had screened before entering the Olympic Park.

Images from Friday?s ceremony showed a young woman in turquoise jeans and a red jacket marching alongside Indian flag bearer Sushil Kumar at the head of the delegation of 40 athletes in bright yellow and navy blue.

?Leaky London: Unaccounted presence in march past,? said a headline in the Times of India. The newspaper said the mystery woman had ?brazenly gatecrashed the party, raising security concerns and adding to the anger over India?s blink-and-miss appearance on global TV screens.?

Bedi said India?s acting chef de mission, P.K.M. Raja, had sent games organizers an official letter of complaint about the intrusion.

?I think this is definitely a security lapse,? Bedi said. ?You cannot have flawless security everywhere, but this is not flawless.?

But London organizing chief Sebastian Coe insisted the woman had not posed a threat to the ceremony. He told reporters she was ?a cast member who clearly got slightly over-excited.?

Some 10,000 volunteers performed alongside professional musicians, actors and dancers in director Danny Boyle?s ceremony.

Coe stressed the woman had been screened to get into Olympic Stadium so there had been no security breach.

?Don?t run away with the idea that she walked in off the street,? Coe said.

Coe said games officials ?will have our own discussions? about the incident.

Now, together with British colleagues from the University of Lancaster, the UFZ researchers have come upon another phenomenon. Accordingly, the fungal networks also transports contaminants which are otherwise largely immobile in the ground. These living pipelines can therefore contribute to the restoration of impacted areas, write the researchers in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.

Some bacteria develop a voracious appetite for contaminants. They nourish themselves from toxic chemicals and at the same time convert these to harmless substances. This makes them valuable allies for the elimination of different forms of environmental pollution. Certain soil microbes, for example, are fully capable of restoring impacted ground by natural means. Theoretically at least. In practice, however, the tiny helpers are frequently pushed to their limits. "The problem is that the contaminants often do not even reach them", explains UFZ researcher Lukas Y. Wick, in charge of the new study.

The bacteria frequently have difficulties with substances which are largely insoluble in water. These include, for example, the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) found in crude oil and coal, released in practically all combustion processes. Along well-travelled roads, in the vicinity of airports or old gas works sites, the ground can also be polluted with these compounds. As many PAHs are considered to be carcinogenic, the help of bacteria for the degradation of this pollution would be entirely welcome.

In the complicated labyrinth of water-filled and air-filled pores found throughout the soil, however, bacteria and PAHs rarely come together. This is because the microorganisms are predominantly found in water and in thin liquid films. "The PAHs are virtually insoluble in water, so that they frequently staple themselves to particles of ground in tiny, air-filled pores", which the bacteria are unable to reach, explains Lukas Y. Wick. Between them and their sources of nutrition there are air barriers.

A living network

Nevertheless, there are soil organisms which can effectively overcome such barriers. These include fungi and a group of similar organisms which biologists describe as "pseudo-fungi". Both can grow either in water or in air and are found throughout the soil with a network of fine threads. Each of these so-called hyphae is in fact only a few thousandths of a millimetre thick. Yet, together they form a network of enormous dimensions. One single gram of soil may contain up to 1000 to 10,000 meters of fungal threads. A single braid thereby can extend over several square kilometres. Fungi are therefore in fact the largest living creatures on the Earth today.

That bacteria are fully capable of utilising the infrastructure of this huge neighbour, emerges from an earlier study of Lukas Y. Wick and his colleagues. The fungal braiding appears to be a kind of highway over which the microorganisms can effectively travel and propagate. They move on the surface of the hyphae and, in this way, overcome the air barriers between two water-filled pores without problem.

But what if the fungal network offers good travel possibilities not only for bacteria, but for contaminants as well? Nevertheless, it is known that the transport of nutrients which the fungus requires to survive takes place within the hyphae. Why should this not function, then, with other substances? Together with colleagues from the University of Lancaster, the UFZ researchers have now pursued this question.

For their investigations the researchers employed a pseudo-fungus with the name Pythium ultimum, which is widespread in the soil. This was placed on a central plate with nutrients, proceeding from which it could extend its hyphae to the right and left to two further sources of nourishment. The three nourishment stations were connected by rectangles of nourishment-free material. However, there were several gaps between the nourishment plates and rectangles containing only air. These were intended to simulate the air-filled pores in the ground.

At the edge of a rectangle the UFZ researchers applied a polycyclic aromatic carbohydrate with the name Phenanthrene. They then investigated at regular intervals whether this substance could be detected in other areas of the test path. "The results were astounding", says Lukas Y. Wick. Within a few hours the carbohydrate had migrated from one end of the experimental arrangement to the other ? from ten to one hundred times faster than it could have by simple diffusion. Furthermore, it overcame the air gaps with no difficulty, which was not possible over the same path without hyphal networks. "The hyphal networks are therefore not only highways for bacteria, but also pipelines for contaminants", concludes Lukas Wick. "Per hour a single hypha can transport up to 600 times the weight of an individual bacterium".

With a special microscope of the British colleagues it was even possible to observe this transport in detail. Accordingly, the contaminant migrates through the cell wall into the interior of the hyphae. There it is enclosed in tiny bubbles, which Pythium ultimum then actively pumps through its far-reaching network.

Contaminants in motion

In this way the fungal pipeline mobilises not only Phenanthrene, but also other substances virtually insoluble in water and therefore sooner immobile substances. The researchers repeated the experiment with a number of different PAHs, and all were found to be efficiently transported. However, over longer paths the transport of small molecules functioned better than that of large molecules. "Presumably the latter are not taken up as well by the hyphae", in the opinion of Lukas Y. Wick.

In this experiment even the longer paths consisted of only a few centimetres. This may appear to be relatively little, however it could still prove decisive for better contact between the contaminants and their decomposers, as the fungal pipeline effortlessly overcomes the minute air barriers between the water-filled soil pores.

The researchers hope that this effect can be utilised in future for the restoration of impacted ground. The targeted use of fungal networks could accelerate the degradation of PAHs and perhaps also of other substances virtually insoluble in water. "But this may function only when one combines the right fungi and bacteria", explains Lukas Y. Wick. Some types of these organisms are simply not compatible or even mutually inhibit each other. NOIDA/GREATER NOIDA: Buying a house or land in Noida, Greater Noida and the Yamuna Expressway areas has become costlier. In a board meeting held on Wednesday, the three development authorities announced a substantial hike in the allotment price across all categories of land.

The hike comes into effect from later this week soon after the authorities publish a formal notice. The Greater Noida and the Yamuna Expressway authorities have also increased the compensation rate to be offered to farmers for acquisition by 10.4%.

While in Noida, the allotment rates of group housing, residential and institutional properties have been hiked by 10.41%, commercial and industrial land rates have been hiked by 15% and 7.5%, respectively.

In Greater Noida, the allotment rate for land across all categories has been uniformly hiked by 10.4%. The Yamuna Expressway area has seen the steepest hike in allotment rates as residential properties have gone up by about 40%, while, the allotment rate for industrial and institutional properties have been hiked by 28 to 42%.

The authorities had last hiked the land rates by about 12.5% in May, 2011. ?The increase in prices is a routine affair carried out each year. It should have happened in March. However, due to the model code of conduct in place and the state elections that followed, the process got delayed,? said Sanjiv Saran, CEO, Noida Authority. ?The hike in allotment rates is also crucial considering the increase in land costs, inflation rates, etc,? Saran said.

The hike is especially important for the Greater Noida Authority that is reeling under a major cash crunch. ?The hike in rates was essential considering our current funds shortage. The year-old land row has imposed an extra burden on the Authority in the form of enhanced compensation and rehabilitation packages for the farmers who agreed upon a compromise. Besides, many development projects have remained stalled for months,? a Greater Noida Authority official said.

Already in a debt of Rs 4,000 crore and several development projects in limbo in the Noida Extension-Greater Noida area, the Greater Noida Authority had recently written to the Noida Authority requesting for a loan to tide over the crisis.

The hike in allotment rates means that residential properties in Noida have become dearer by at least Rs 5,100 per sqm in ?A? category sectors like 14,14A, 15A, 17 and 44 and by Rs 1,855 per sqm in ?E? category sectors like 102,115,158. Group housing flats in Noida have become costlier by almost Rs 7,000 per sqm in the ?A? category areas and by Rs 4,640 per sqm in ?B? category areas.

In the institutional category for IT/ITES properties, buyers will have to shell out Rs 29,515 per sqm now. For plots falling in the Phase II and III areas along the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, the allotment rates have been fixed at Rs 10,660 per sqm.

Justifying the steep hike of nearly 40% in residential and institutional land falling in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority?s area, an official said that compared to Greater Noida they had not increased their land rates since May, 2011. ?Also, considering the new Master Plan-2031 having a greater expanse of green areas and more land slated for roads, the remaining land for construction and allotment has reduced leading to the need for a increase in land rates,? the official said.

It would be understandable for the victims of the Colorado theater shooting and their families to want to seek retribution.

But Pierce O'Farrill, a 28-year-old who was shot three times, says he has forgiven James Holmes, the suspected shooter in last week's Aurora, Colo., massacre.

"Of course, I forgive him with all my heart," O'Farrill told reporters shortly before his release from the Univ. of Colorado Hospital on Wednesday. "When I saw him in his hearing, I felt nothing but sorrow for him--he's just a lost soul right now."

O'Farrill--a staffer at the Denver Rescue Mission, a Christian charity organization that helps "people at their physical and spiritual points of need, with the goal of returning them to society as productive, self-sufficient citizens"--told the Denver Post he would eventually like to meet Holmes.

"I want to see him sometime," O'Farrill, one of 58 people wounded in the shooting, said. "The first thing I want to say to him is 'I forgive you,' and the next is, 'Can I pray for you?'"

O'Farrill's compassion is in stark contrast to the brother of Jessica Ghawi, one of 12 people killed in Friday's "Dark Knight Rises" rampage.

Jordan Ghawi did not attend Holmes' first court appearance on Monday because he feared he might try to avenge his sister's death.

"I was afraid that I may try to get my hands on that man," Jordan Ghawi said in an interview with CNN outside the Arapahoe County District Court shortly after the hearing.

Holmes appeared dazed as a judge told him he would be held without bond on suspicion of first-degree murder. But Ghawi, who described Holmes as a "coward and a genius," did not buy it.

"I don't believe for a second he is sitting there with the wide eyes and pretending to be incoherent," Ghawi said. "He knows what he is doing."

An artificial ?brain? built by a 17-year-old whiz kid from Florida is able to accurately assess tissue samples for signs of breast cancer, providing more confidence to a minimally invasive procedure.

The cloud-based neural network took top prize in this year?s Google Science Fair.?

?I taught the computer how to diagnose breast cancer,? Brittany Wenger, the Lakewood Ranch resident, told me today.

?And this is really important because currently the least invasive form of biopsy is actually the least conclusive, so a lot of doctors can?t use them.?

Wenger wanted to create a way for more doctors to use the minimally invasive procedure, called Fine Needle Aspirate, in order to ease the process of having lumps examined.

Breast cancer affects one in eight women worldwide, she noted, including members of her family.

?Early detection is really important,? Wenger said. ?And that is what I?m trying to do with my neural network.?

Artificial neural networks are essentially computer programs coded to think like the brain, she explained. Only they can detect patterns that are too complex for mere humans.?

And they get better as they process more and more data.

Wenger started building these networks in the seventh grade after studying the future of technology for a school project.?

?I came across artificial intelligence and was just enthralled. I went home the next day and bought a programming book and decided that was what I was going to teach myself to do,? she said.

Her first neural network played soccer.

For her Google Science Fair project, she built a neural network with Java and then deployed it to the?cloud. She ran 7.6 million trials on it and found it is 99.1 percent sensitive to malignancy.

?As I get more data, the success rate will go up and the inconclusive rate will go down,? she said. ?So with more data, I think it is hospital ready.?

She also?compared her custom-built network to three off-the-shelf products that she tweaked to work with her dataset. Her sensitivity to malignancy was 4.97 percent better than the commercial networks.

Now that her network is built and shown to get smarter with experience, Wenger aims to deploy it in hospitals. She also wants to extend it to other types of cancer.

?It will require a little bit of coding and tweaking, but it would be very easy to adapt it so it could diagnose other types of cancer and potentially other medical problems,? she said.

Before she gets cracking, though, Wenger deserves to bask in the glory of victory. The grand prize comes with $50,000 in scholarship money, an internship with a fair sponsor and a 10-day trip to the Galapagos Islands.

?I?ve never been to South America,? she said. ?I?m so excited.?

Satellites reveal sudden ice melt

The surface of Greenland's massive ice sheet has melted this month over an unusually large area, Nasa has said.

Scientists said the "unprecedented" melting took place over a larger area than has been detected in three decades of satellite observation.

Melting even occurred at Greenland's coldest and highest place, Summit station.

The thawed ice area jumped from 40% of the ice sheet to 97% in just four days from 8 July.

Although about half of Greenland's ice sheet normally sees surface melting over the summer months, the speed and scale of this year's thaw surprised scientists, who described the phenomenon as "extraordinary".

Nasa said that nearly the entire ice cover of Greenland, from its thin, low-lying coastal edges to its centre, which is 3km (two miles) thick, experienced some degree of melting at its surface.

Until now, the most extensive melting seen by satellites in the past three decades was about 55% of the area.

According to ice core records, such pronounced melting at Summit station and across the ice sheet has not occurred since 1889.

"When we see melt in places that we haven't seen before, at least in a long period of time, it makes you sit up and ask what's happening," Nasa chief scientist Waleed Abdalati said.

"It's a big signal, the meaning of which we're going to sort out for years to come."

He said that, because this Greenland-wide melting has happened before - in 1889 - scientists are not yet able to determine whether this is a natural but rare event, or if it has been sparked by man-made climate change.

"Ice cores from Summit show that melting events of this type occur about once every 150 years on average. With the last one happening in 1889, this event is right on time," said Lora Koenig, a glaciologist from Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland and a member of the research team analysing the satellite data.

"But if we continue to observe melting events like this in upcoming years, it will be worrisome."

Scientists said they believed that much of Greenland's ice was already freezing again.

The news comes just days after Nasa satellite imagery revealed that a massive iceberg, twice the size of Manhattan, had broken off a glacier in Greenland.

"This event, combined with other natural but uncommon phenomena, such as the large calving event last week on Petermann Glacier, are part of a complex story," said Nasa's Tom Wagner.

Establishing an environment that will encourage job creation and business expansion in our state has always been one of my highest priorities while in office. It is our duty as elected officials to provide stability and certainty for Iowa employers. We need to focus on policies that support job creators and encourage innovation. We also have a responsibility to shed light on issues that have the potential to negatively impact Iowa companies and fight for what is best for our great state.

One major key to job creation is ensuring companies across Iowa have access to quality broadband services. According to Connect Iowa, a broadband advocacy group, approximately 26,000 jobs are created or saved with every seven percent increase in broadband adoption.

Last March I wrote about new rules that had been proposed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) which had the potential to jeopardize rural Iowa?s access to quality Broadband Internet. At that time, the FCC had proposed troubling changes to the ?Universal Service Fund?, which helped extend telephone and Internet services to rural areas. The new FCC regulations were likely to reduce funding and decrease predictability for many locally-based cooperatives and commercial telecom providers in Iowa.

New developments have recently been released by the FCC that continue to take rural Iowa down the path of reduced access to Broadband Internet. The FCC has now replaced the Universal Service Fund with the Connect America Fund, and has eliminated the access fees that many of our rural Iowa telecom providers depend on for consistent revenue.

The bulk of the new Connect America Fund will go to large companies that do not generally focus on expanding services to rural Iowa. Additionally, it is important to note that all Iowans will be affected by the new rule, because the FCC considers the entire state of Iowa to be rural, not just our small communities. This means that Iowans will continue to be taxed by the federal government to pay into the Connect America Fund, without receiving improved Internet services, while urban areas such as New York City and Chicago receive a disproportionate share of our money. Telecom consumers in Iowa will pay an extra 50 cents per month and businesses an extra dollar per month in access recovery charges, with additional charges pending in 2013 and 2014.

We live in a fast-paced world. In order to be successful in today?s business climate, it is essential that companies have quick and reliable Internet services. They must be able to seamlessly communicate with companies around the world, easily market their product or service, and effortlessly retrieve information online. While this is a federal issue, it is important that Iowans know about this matter and I encourage you to contact our federal delegation with your concerns. House Republican Leadership has sponsored a resolution opposing this change.

In other news, the Cerro Gordo County Fair and Franklin County Fair recently wrapped up. The high school softball and baseball seasons are also drawing to an end. I truly enjoy following the accomplishments of our youth throughout these various activities. We have some very talented young people in North Iowa! It?s hard to believe these staples of Iowa summers- baseball, softball, and county fairs- are already finishing up for another year. I hope you are able to fit in a nice summer vacation with your family, or just set aside some time to enjoy some of the great Iowa destinations and attractions during these remaining weeks.
