Washington Redskins: Players on the Roster Bubble Who Will Make the Final 53

The Washington Redskins are in a rather favorable situation with most positions on their roster, and that is that they are not short on talent.?

Between their competitive running back stable and mix of veteran and upstart wide receivers, this is a good problem to have.?

The backup running back position is perhaps their most interesting offensive camp battle so far.?

They have a trio of guys with experience who have proven they can be valuable runners, and they recently picked up two more running backs in the draft who will be in the mix for a roster spot.?

Offensive line is also a position in which they are pretty set at, besides right tackle. The most competition on the O-line is definitely with the interior linemen; there are several young guys who can play and play well if given the chance.?

With preseason upon us and roster cuts looming, there is much speculation surrounding which players on Washington?s roster bubble will end up making the team and which will end up looking for work by the time summer ends.?

There will be many broken-hearted players when the Redskins make their final cuts, but there will also be a couple of surprises regarding some of these guys on the bubble.

?

Evan Royster, RB

While Alfred Morris has the starting running back spot sewn up, there is a ton of competition behind him.?

It is unlikely that Washington will keep more than three running backs, so the guys who will earn the backup and third-string slots will have to prove that they can bring a spark to the Redskins? running game.?

Evan Royster has shown flashes of being a dependable back in the past, but has done especially well with catching the ball out of the backfield and grinding out yards as the game goes on.?

He may not put up a great yards-per-carry average, but he is a solid change-of-pace, outlet pass-type of guy whom Kyle Shanahan can plug into most packages in relief of Morris.?

He surely doesn?t make the type of impact that Morris does, but he can get the job done in a minimized role.

?

Maurice Hurt, OL

Maurice Hurt is one of those guys who had a pretty good future lined up for him in Washington, that is until the right tackle position got extremely crowded.?

While the group isn?t exactly littered with talent, there is competition.?

It is evident that incumbent starter Tyler Polumbus is not the long-term answer, and Tony Pashos and?Jeremy Trueblood are stop-gap solutions for now. The only other player with any sort of promise is Xavier Nixon, a rookie from Florida who has great athleticism and a tremendous skill set.?

While neither Hurt nor Nixon is really ready to step in and become ?the guy,? Washington still needs a dependable starter at right tackle.?

When it comes down to who is better between these two guys, you have to go with the more experienced player. Nixon will probably end up being the better overall player, but Hurt is familiar with the system and could be a pretty good player while Nixon still adjusts to life in the NFL.

?

Devery Henderson, WR

This may come as a surprise to some of you, but Devery Henderson will have a great chance at making this roster.?

While he certainly isn?t the best receiver on Washington?s roster, he has a solid set of hands and can become a reliable fourth or fifth option for Robert Griffin III.?

With Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan firmly atop the depth chart at wide receiver, and Santana Moss holding it down as the third receiver, Henderson could find his way onto the roster by proving he can be more consistent than Leonard Hankerson and Aldrick Robinson.?

Henderson isn?t particularly tall or anything, but he possesses good speed for a veteran and has the ability to be a contributing factor on offense for Washington.?

Wagoner jail escape Monday, inmates behind bars Tuesday.

Wagoner jail escape: Two inmates who escaped from a Wagoner, Okla., jail cell Monday night were recaptured today. In Arkansas, a man jumps through a counter window and escapes.

By Associated Press / July 30, 2013

Authorities in Wagoner County say they've captured both inmates who escaped from the county jail after overpowering a guard and locking him in a cell.

Sheriff Bob Colbert says the jailbreak happened at about 9 p.m. Monday. He says 38-year-old Mickey Staggs and 25-year-old Larry Cotton took the jailer's keys after locking him up.

The jailer wasn't seriously injured.

The sheriff says Cotton was arrested without incident Tuesday inside a vacant apartment in south Wagoner. Staggs was apprehended at about noon Tuesday walking in a wooded area near Sperry.

Cotton was awaiting trial on several charges, including possession of a stolen vehicle and endangering others while attempting to elude police officers.

Staggs was also awaiting trial on weapons charges and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Another jailbreak - in Garland County, Arkansas, was captured on video (see above).

Derrick Estell can be seen talking on a phone in jail Sunday, and when a police deputy turns his back, Estell dives through a counter window, runs out the door, across a parking lot to a waiting car. The deputy dives through the window and chases him.

Police say that Estell had help.

"Police say William Harding, 58, was taken into custody for allegedly assisting in the escape. Officials say he began talking to deputies in order to divert their attention and have them go to the other side of the booking room to look up answers," reports CBS affiliate KTHV in Little Rock, Ark.

A woman, identified by police as Tamara Upshaw, was reportedly waiting in the parking lot for Estell with the passenger door to her car open.

Police have issued an arrest warrant for Upshaw and Estell, but they are still on the lamb.

5 Gifs of n-body Orbits [Animation]

?What I do is I have code that minimizes things,? says Robert Vanderbei, a Professor of Operations Research at Princeton University. He can minimize the light coming into a telescope from stars ? to better see if there are more-softly lit planets traveling in their wakes. He also uses the code to analyze climate data.

But it works for other things, too.

?I was surprised to know that what I?m good at is useful for n-body problems,? he tells me.

The n-body problem is a classic in physics. Its solutions are configurations in which objects ? planets, say ? can travel around in each other?s gravity in a stable manner. (The moon and Earth perform a modified version of a 2-body solution ? they travel in each other?s gravity, but also that of the Sun, and other planets. The n-body problem assumes bodies that are of equal mass, and in an environment where there is no other gravity. I?ll keep calling them planets, but understand that they are not ordinary planets.)

To find a solution to the n-body problem is to minimize something called an action functional, which describes the energy of group of planets ? the accumulated difference between the kinetic and potential energy, to be more specific about it ? as they swing and pull and dance around each other. The result is the path of least resistance, the way that the planet?s motion will naturally fall into place, without an external forces ? a purely gravitational path. Out of these paths, the ones that are periodic ? that is, the planets swing around in the same motion for at least some extended period of time ? are the solutions to the n-body problem.

Vanderbei first learned of a solution to the n-body problem called the figure 8, discovered by physicist Cris Moore, the first physicist who used a computer to solve the n-body problem.

?I said wow, that is amazing,? he tells me. And then he went home and tried to figure it out with his minimizing code. In a couple hours, he had reproduced Moore?s figure 8:

He modified the computer code a little, so that it would run through cases with different starting positions and velocities. Some of these starting positions ? most of them, actually ? end up just sending the planets immediately flying off in different directions, or crashing into each other. But run through enough configurations, and you can find solutions. This is how he found ?Ducati? ? which he refers to as his favorite.

This one is what would happen if the Sun, Earth, and Moon all had the same mass, and there were only two months in a year. (Like Ducati, others experts had found this orbit before Vanderbei did ? unbeknownst to him.)

Vanderbei says this one, the 5 point star, which was discovered by Zhifu Xie and Tiancheng Ouyang, surprised him the most. It?s the kind of thing you would draw mindlessly on a napkin. (The lines of the start aren?t technically straight, though that?s not apparent in the animation.)

He found this one in June, which is in the same family ? which is to say, a tweak of starting positions and velocities ? as Xie and Ouyang?s star:

(Many, many more animations of n-body orbits ? in the form of applets ? can be found here.

?I take other people?s ?aha? moments and run with them,? says Vanderbei, who works on the n-body problem sometimes when he gets home in the evenings, coming up with animations for solutions that are out there, and making tweaks of his own.

?Its totally for fun. Well, 99%.?

When I speak to him, he?s in the middle of putting together a presentation for conference at Princeton on the payload for a pair of former-spy telescopes ?which could include instruments that hunt for planets, a la Kepler.

?The solutions to the n-body problem could inform what we might find out there. I always worry that [our] minds aren?t open enough.?

The Right Tools to Build an Extreme Treehouse

jonrawlinson/Flickr

If I had a bucket list, building an extreme treehouse (or even an entire tree neighborhood) would be on it. I loved being in trees when I was a kid. I love being in trees as an adult, too, though I think my chances of breaking bones when I fall are higher these days.

Recently I found myself browsing treehouses.com, a website that primarily focuses on treehouses in Oregon. However, the site also has a parts department that features the coolest selection of custom-engineered treehouse hardware I've ever seen. Oh, what a new world of design possibilities has been opened up unto me. The company sells brackets designed to connect wood to trees in dozens of creative ways, all of which allow the tree to grow naturally and the manmade structure to sway gently with the breeze. Before you take on your own extreme treehouse build, head over there and gear up.

Does Amazon Confirmation E Mail Indicate A Delay for The PS 4

Like many consumers the launch of the upcoming game consoles from Microsoft and Sony are a hotly contested, yet highly anticipated event.? For this article I am not going to be taking a stance on the merits of one system over the other but simply pointing out some interesting maneuverings in the presell battles.? The other day I was contacted by some people who told me that they had a cryptic message from Amazon regarding their day one pre-order of PlayStation 4.? I did some checking with other people improve ordered and even looked at a pre-order we had set aside as a gift. Upon checking the status of the order, I was given the following message ?.Thank you for shopping with us. We?d like to let you know that Amazon has received your order, and is preparing it for shipment. Your estimated delivery date is: Monday, January 6, 2014 ? Wednesday, January 8, 2014.

While I appreciated the attention to detail this does raise some rather interesting questions .? Since all the people I checked with were day one pre-orders either the supply of new PlayStation 4 consoles is going to be very limited or perhaps the January date signifies a later release date then fans had originally intended as most of them had been expecting the new consoles somewhere around November of 2014.? Now I understand this could simply be investment and should I release date in November arrived that certainly would not be out of the question for the consuls to ship early.? However as somebody who regularly purchases through Amazon, they generally do not commit to a ship date without a pretty good understanding of one product will be available.? The standard line has always been we have received your order and able ship once the product is ready and that she will be given an e-mail at a time to verify this.

I went to the local GameStop to do some browsing as I often do and talk with the staff .? The employee told me that Microsoft has only allocated a very small amount of Xbox One units to retailers for launch.? He said this tactic allows Microsoft to count that they have sold out of all of their pre-orders as well as create demand for the unit through orders that will be filled in the weeks and months ahead.

He said that Sony on the other hand has set no limits as to their pre-orders.? As a result, he believes that several people who pre-ordered expecting a day one release, will actually receive their unit for several months or weeks down the road when supplies start to catch up with demand.? He said there will likely be some very upset people who thought they would be getting a day one shipment as a pre-ordered at the first available date from their retailer but will find out that they may not see unit for a few months after street date.

Interestingly enough, GameStop yesterday indicated that they had received a limited allocation of Xbox One units that were available for pre-order and that consumers wishing to get their hands on the new console needed to take advantage of this offer before they were gone.

In the end what really will matter is the quality of the unit?s , the games , and the features of each console, but for people who purchased pre-orders on day one with the anticipation of having units for the upcoming holiday season, this could lead to a lot of frustration for both consumers and retailers alike if people with day one pre-orders are forced to wait weeks or months for delivery.

Sea Monkeys, Sex Toys, and Gatorade

The strange man who invented X-ray specs, sea monkeys, Balderdash, and more.

?How did we fall for von Braunhut?s [ad] copy, even as children? It?s hard to remember a prior state of innocence once you?ve come to understand what salesmanship is. When it came to X-Ray Specs, if you were savvy enough to be suspicious, you were also savvy enough to understand that there were naughty secrets your parents didn?t want you to know?maybe this was one of them? Hey, maybe it was worth a buck to find out.?

Engineer Ethan Imboden?s drive to make sex toys beautiful and mainstream.

?At dinner parties in San Francisco, where he lives, Imboden found that mentioning sex toys unleashed conversations that appeared to have been only awaiting permission. ?Suddenly I was at the nexus of everybody's thoughts and aspirations of sexuality,? he said. ?Suddenly it was OK for anyone to talk to me about it.? It occurred to Imboden that the people who buy sex toys are not some other group of people. They are among the half of all Americans who, according to a recent Indiana University study, report having used a vibrator. They are people, like those waiting outside Apple stores for the newest iPhone model, who typically surround themselves with brands that reinforce a self-concept. They spend money on quality products, and care about the safety of those products. Yet, for the very products they use most intimately?arguably the ones whose quality and safety people should care most about?they were buying gimmicky items of questionable integrity. It's just that people had never come to expect or demand anything different?silenced by society's ?shame tax on sexuality,? as one sex toy retailer put it to me. And few alternatives existed.?

The Televisionary
Malcolm Gladwell ? The New Yorker ? May 2002

It?s easy to call corporations evil, but what if they actually spur innovation by supporting inventors?

?In April, 1931, Sarnoff showed up at the Green Street laboratory to review Farnsworth's work. This was, by any measure, an extraordinary event. Farnsworth was twenty-four, and working out of a ramshackle building. Sarnoff was one of the leading industrialists of his day. It was as if Bill Gates were to get in his private jet and visit a software startup in a garage across the country. But Farnsworth wasn't there. He was in New York, trapped there by a court order resulting from a frivolous lawsuit filed by a shady would-be investor. Stashower calls this one of the great missed opportunities of Farnsworth's career, because he almost certainly would have awed Sarnoff with his passion and brilliance, winning a lucrative licensing deal. Instead, an unimpressed Sarnoff made a token offer of a hundred thousand dollars for Farnsworth's patents, and Farnsworth dismissed the offer out of hand. This, too, is a reason that inventors ought to work for big corporations: big corporations have legal departments to protect their employees against being kept away from their laboratories by frivolous lawsuits. A genius is a terrible thing to waste.?

7 Ways Larry Page Is Defining Google's Future
Farhad Manjoo ? Fast Company ? April 2011

A rundown of innovation at Google, just as current CEO Larry Page took over.

?So if you've ever wondered why Google needed its own web browser, called Chrome, here's why: It needed Chrome to goad Microsoft, Apple, and other browser makers into reigniting innovation in what had become a moribund market. Everyone's efforts collectively improve the web as a whole, which is good for Google and its ad business. Even if its rivals merely copied Chrome's advancements?superfast, stable, and, thus far, impossible to hack?Google saw that it could achieve its larger goals. About 10% of web surfers now use Chrome, which is respectable, but not as important as pushing Microsoft to retire the decrepit IE 6 browser in favor of new versions with a string of great improvements.

The bureaucratic and financial problems behind a simple, ubiquitous, wound-closing technology.

?Dr. Louis Argenta says he invented the VAC, and he has the patents to prove it. He's a plastic surgeon at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., but is quick to point out that he isn't that kind of plastic surgeon. He deals with messy and nasty injuries that often can't or won't heal on their own. One night in the late 1980s, he was lying in bed and unable to sleep. He was reading The Gulag Archipelago and was worried about a patient who was slowly dying from an infected wound that couldn't be closed with surgery because the stitches would make things worse. ?And, just suddenly,? he would say later, ?the concept of just using a giant vacuum?we had played with vacuums in the laboratory a little bit, but this was the concept of using a giant vacuum to pull this whole thing together.? He sketched a rough drawing in the margins of his book, and his wife told him to go back to sleep.?

The Bottle and the Babe
Gilbert Rogin ? Sports Illustrated ? July 1968

On the origins of Gatorade and its prolific inventor, Robert Cade.

?However, Gatorade won't work unless the athletes are willing to drink it, and unflavored Gatorade tastes like salt water. Indeed, when it was first served in a game (Florida vs. LSU in 1965), Guard Larry Gagner said, memorably, ?This water tastes like ****,? and poured it over his head.?

Tulsa Golden Hurricane is ranked No. 29 in Sentinel preseason college football countdown

Tulsa football

Tulsa won the 2012 Conference USA title and looks to claim another in 2013. (Beth Hall, US-Presswire.)

Orlando Sentinel college insider Matt Murschel has ranked all 125 Football Bowl Subdivision teams in the country. The Sentinel staff will take a closer look at a new team daily, counting backward from No. 125 to our projected No. 1 team.

Today at No. 29: Tulsa

Coach: Bill Blankenship (19-8 third season; 19-8 overall)

2012 record: 11-3 (7-1 Conference USA; first C-USA West; C-USA champs)

Look back: The Golden Hurricane won its first Conference USA championship since 2005, building on its success in the league. Tulsa has won 10 games or more in four of the past six years and earned bowl invitations in seven of the past eight seasons. Tulsa did so behind a backfield that totaled 3,440 rushing yards and 41 touchdowns, and a defense that was among the best in the country. Tulsa lost its season opener to Iowa State and dropped a game to Arkansas by four points, but the team downed UCF twice en route to the conference title. The Golden Hurricane exacted revenge on Iowa State in the Liberty Bowl with a 31-17 win.

Offensive starters returning: 7

Offensive starters lost: 4

Defensive starters returning: 3

Defensive starters lost: 8

Key losses: OL Brian DeShane, OL Jared Grigg, OL Trent Dupy, DL Cory Dorris, LB DeAundre Brown, DB Dexter McCoil, DL Jared St. John, RB Alex Singleton

Top returnees: WR Keyarris Garrett, QB Cody Green, WR Jordan James, RB Trey Watts, DB Marco Nelson, LB Shawn Jackson, RB Ja'Terian Douglas

Strengths: The offense will have to carry the team this season. Tulsa returns its top two leading rushers (Trey Watts, 1,108 yards, 3 TDs and Ja'Terian Douglas, 936 yards, 7 TDs), starting QB Cody Green and three starting receivers, highlighted by all-conference performers Keyarris Garrett and Jordan James. Green passed for 2,592 yards last season with 17 touchdowns, but also had 11 interceptions and will have to improve his decision-making. Garrett (845 yards, 9 TDs) was a true deep threat and can open things up. Watts also was a strong return specialist.

Weaknesses: The defense loses the bulk of its lineup, including the entire defensive line and most of the secondary. The production up front is most difficult to replace. Tulsa ranked 16th in the country in rushing defense, but lost its top two leading tacklers in LB DeAundre Brown (125 tackles) and DB Dexter McCoil (91 tackles). The Golden Hurricane also lost its pass-rushing presence in Jared St. John (11.5 sacks), Brown (9 sacks) and Cory Dorris (6 sacks). Tulsa also will have to replace three all-conference offensive linemen, including first-team C-USA selections Brian DeShane and Jared Grigg.

Outlook: Though the defense will likely take a step back in 2013, the offense should be as tough as ever with plenty of experienced playmakers back in the lineup. The revamped C-USA lineup also poses fewer challenges for Tulsa. If the offensive line comes together and the Golden Hurricane defense can remain steady, Tulsa should be in line for a second consecutive conference championship and a return trip to the Liberty Bowl.
