Study authors note that tax deductions, credits for donors remain worthwhile, further measures should be explored

The policies that several states have adopted giving tax deductions or credits to living organ donors do not appear to have increased donation rates. Authors of the study, appearing in the August issue of the American Journal of Transplantation, found little difference in the annual number of living organ donations per 100,000 population between the 15 states that had enacted some sort of tax benefit as of 2009 and states having no such policy at that time.

"There continue to be sizeable shortages in available organs for transplant, despite a number of interventions taken over the past two decades to increase donations," says Atheendar Venkataramani, MD, PhD, a resident in Internal Medicine-Global Primary Care at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), the lead and corresponding author of the report. "Tax policies were thought to be a way to increase donations without challenging the public's unease about outright payment for organs, but our evidence shows they have not increased the organ supply very much, if at all."

In 2004, Wisconsin became the first state to enact a policy allowing living organ donors to deduct up to $10,000 in donation-related costs from their state income taxes. In subsequent years several additional states including Massachusetts, New York, Georgia and Ohio enacted similar tax deductions, and Iowa granted donors a tax credit. There currently are a total of 17 states offering a tax benefit to living organ donors (see list at end of release), and 18 additional states are considering similar legislation. A single study had previously investigated the impact of tax incentives on rates of living donation, but that only looked at effects immediately after the laws were enacted and did not consider key subgroups for whom effects might be larger.

Using information on the total number of living solid-organ donors in each state between 2000 and 2010, provided by the United Network for Organ Sharing and the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network, the investigators analyzed trends in living donation rates in the five years before and up to four years immediately after tax incentives were adopted in the 15 states that had such policies in 2009. For states with no tax benefit for donation, they tracked donation rates in the five years prior to and following 2005.

In the years before tax policies were enacted, differences in donation rates between both groups of states were slight, and the researchers found no significant increase in donations in states with tax policies in the years following enactment. These findings held across subgroups for gender, race, and the relationship of the donor to the recipient.

The authors note several potential reasons why tax policies had little impact on donation rates, including the relatively low cash value of the incentives less than $1,000 for a middle-income family of four in most states and a lack of awareness of the incentives, even at state Donate Life offices. They add that future studies should examine these factors more closely and explore potential additional strategies for increasing living donations.

"These tax incentives cost the states very little, so there is no real reason to do away with them," says Venkataramani. "Instead we should focus on improving them to better encourage living donation. And even if these policies don't increase donor rates, they benefit individuals who donate regardless of any financial incentives and provide an incredible gift, sometimes to strangers. If tax deductions can help them with their expenses, perhaps reducing the stress of donation, that is certainly worthwhile."

Isotope researchers meet in Leipzig

This release is available in German.

Leipzig. More than 250 international scientists will be meeting in the first week of September in Leipzig to share their experiences on the latest methods and applications using stable isotopes. Stable isotopes are a tool that can be used in a wide range of areas in natural sciences and medicine as, with their help, it is possible to establish the origin of substances, and dynamic processes can be made visible. For example, it is possible to establish where a red wine really comes from, the cause of water damage, how the concentration of carbon dioxide at the South Pole evolved, whether microorganisms break down pollutants in soil and water or the effects a medication has on the body. Just like with criminal investigators, stable isotopes help environmental researchers to follow traces and solve mysteries. The research on stable, i.e. non-radioactive, isotopes has been carried out in the Leipzig Science Park for more than half a century and brings together scientists from a range of disciplines.

European isotope researchers visit Leipzig

Between 2 and 7 September over 250 scientists who carry out research with isotopes will meet to share their experiences in the Leipziger KUBUS the conference centre of the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). The JESIUM meeting (Joint European Stable Isotope User Meeting) is being held for the first time in Germany. The conference participants come from 22 European countries as well as Australia, Brazil, Canada and the USA. JESIUM was launched in 2004 to strengthen contacts between European isotope researchers and takes place every 4 years. This year's meeting is being organised by the German Association of Stable Isotope Research (ASI e.V.) and its purpose is to establish closer links with European partner organisations from Austria, France, the United Kingdom, Benelux and Eastern Europe.

Over half a century of research with stable isotopes

Isotopes are atoms of the same chemical element which differ only in the number of neutrons in the core of the atom. A distinction is made between stable isotopes and unstable (radioactive) isotopes.

Leipzig has a long tradition of research in this area. In the 1960s a special institute for stable isotopes was built on the former research site of the GDR's Academy of Sciences at Permoserstrae. The 40-metre tower, which can still be seen from far away today, was used for many years to enrich a range of stable isotopes, with 15N the most important. The UFZ today uses research with stable isotopes in a number of fields.

Stable isotopes a kind of "Swiss Army Knife"

Changes in the environment often result in changes in the relationship between the different isotopes. Scientists use this to investigate and better understand processes in the environment. At JESIUM 2012 the scientists will be discussing in Leipzig among other things the application of isotopes in water, soil and rock analyses, in ecological systems, in medicine and pharmacy and in global element cycles such as carbon and nitrogen. Also on the agenda are the identification of the origin of foods, forensics, climate research and the latest analytical techniques. Stable isotopes can be used, for example, to reconstruct the climatic history, better understand the origin of living beings and prove whether contaminants in groundwater or soil are being biodegraded. JESIUM, as a user forum for isotope applications, then passes the ball directly on to young scientists.

Future forensic scientists visit Leipzig

On 7 and 8 September scientists and doctoral students of the European Union funded Marie Curie Initial Training Network "CSI:ENVIRONMENTt" will meet at the UFZ. The young scientists from 14 countries will then complete a training course between 10 and 14 September. CSI does not stand here for "Crime Scene Investigation", well known from several TV-series, but for "Compound Specific Isotope Analysis". However, both use modern techniques to follow traces which lead in the end to the "perpetrator". Following the traces of organic pollutants is one of the greatest challenges in environmental sciences today. Chemicals can enter the environment by chance or on purpose. Following their traces is an important prerequisite for effective environmental protection. For example, chemicals from different producers and suppliers are compared to establish who is responsible for causing damage. And this finally leads us to the UFZ's Department of Isotope Biogeochemistry, whose work focuses on this area and is hosting the CSI:ENVIRONMENT training course. "With stable carbon isotopes we not only want to investigate the degradation of common groundwater contaminants, but further develop the methods so that for example the fate of chloroacetamide herbicides in planted wetlands or the photochemical degradation of the petrol additive MTBE in the atmosphere can be investigated. As these substances can be toxic, it is important to find out whether and how these substances may enter the environment," explains Dr. Ivonne Nijenhuis of the UFZ. The training of young isotope researchers in networks such as 'CSI:ENVIRONMENT' is therefore making an important contribution for the next few decades.

Recession 'drives invention boom'

Britons have risen to the economic challenges of recent recession by becoming more prolific inventors, a random survey of 2,000 Britons shows.

A third of respondents claimed that the recession has increased the amount they were coming up with inventions and innovative, money-saving solutions.

A third of those with a bright idea were learning more science and technology books to help refine it.

One in 10 adults had looked into or applied for a patent in the last year.

"This research shows the recession has sparked a real 'can do' attitude amongst ordinary people of all ages who are looking to make some extra cash - and it's amazing to see that, as a nation, we are turning to science and engineering to make the impossible possible," said Dragon's Den success and first "inventor-in-residence" at London's Science Museum Mark Champkins.

"Breakthroughs using science and technology hold the key to not only transforming individuals' lives but the state of our country's future economic growth."

The survey, commissioned by the Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair, found that young people were part of the boom as well; 5% of survey respondents aged 11 to 18 had looked into or applied for a patent in the last year.

It is those young inventors that are of greatest interest to Big Bang fair; organisers are encouraging young inventors and technologists to put forward their ideas in the National Science and Engineering Competition.

"With a chance to compete for top prizes worth over ?50,000, it's the perfect incentive to test, stretch and expand young minds," said Mr Champkins.

"That 'light bulb moment' could see them crowned 'UK Young Engineer of the Year' or 'UK Young Scientist of the Year'."

Steve Jobs' legacy: Best still to come from Apple | Kuwait Times

p32a2 Steve Jobs legacy: Best still to come from Apple Steve Jobs resigned as chief executive of Apple on the evening of August 24, 2011, six weeks before he lost his long battle against pancreatic cancer. But his ideas live on in the iconic technology company he co-founded in a garage.

?I believe Apple?s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it,? Jobs wrote in his open resignation letter as, with a heavy heart, he was forced by ill-health to relinquish his leadership of Apple. Debilitated by the long fight with cancer, his body was no longer able to cope with the daily stress of running a multi-national that had just eclipsed oil giant Exxon Mobil as the publicly traded company with the world?s biggest market valuation.

Spurred by the success of the iPhone, Apple has gone on to become the most valuable company in the history of stock markets. This week, Apple?s surging sales and new products on the horizon propelled the company?s value to 624 billion dollars, topping Microsoft?s 1999 record market capitalization at the height of the internet bubble. Hollywood could not have scripted Apple?s history better.

The college dropout Jobs builds one of the first home computers in a garage with friend Steve Wozniak. The company grows quickly, but a rift in management leads to Jobs? ouster from his own company in 1985. In 1997, with Apple facing oblivion in the face of rival Microsoft?s dominant Windows operating system, Jobs returns as the saviour, redesigning the once-revolutionary Macintosh computer as the iMac and making it cool once again.

The first glimpse of Jobs? greater goal emerges with the success of the iPod digital music players, and Apple?s iTimes ushers the company into the business of marketing music and later films and books. Apple is now more than a simple computer manufacturer.? The first iPhone was introduced in 2007. Initially laughed at by competitors such as Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer, Apple turned the entire mobile-phone market upside down with its smartphone.

The iPhone?s touch screen quickly became standard, and industry giants such as Nokia and Blackberry-maker Research In Motion began to shudder at the market power of Apple. PC manufacturers learned to fear Apple in 2010 when the company launched the iPad. Rather than trying to claw back long-lost market share in the computer industry that he helped pioneer, Jobs innovated PCs into obsolescence and positioned Apple to dominate the next big thing: mobile computing.

Apple is still reaping the profits from the ideas and decisions of its founder, with the iPhone raking in profits while the iPad is the growth engine. Yet new Apple chief Tim Cook has managed to step out of the shadow of his long-time mentor. While Jobs often ruled like an emperor in his kingdom, Cook has made the company more transparent.

Cook heeded criticism of work conditions for employees of Apple?s Chinese suppliers, putting in place reforms at the company?s manufacturing contractors. He has listened to calls from shareholders for the payment of a dividend and did a u-turn after coming under fire for dropping out of an environmental rating system. By comparison, Jobs was famous for letting such pressure simply bounce off him.

Since Cook took the helm at Apple, the company?s value has doubled to more than 600 million dollars. Investors will speculate over the coming months about the new iPhone, a smaller iPad and a broader entry by Apple into the television business.? ?We simply remain true to our basic principles and build the best products,? Cook said recently. ?And because we are doing that, we are convinced that good times lie ahead for us.? ? dpa

With Kitchen Area & Bathroom Cabinets You Will - Home ...

With Kitchen area & bathroom cabinets you will be availing dual benefits viz. improvement in the looks along with good entry to space. The greatest visited locations of a home are kitchen area & bathroom. This is why individuals pay interest to these sections while they are either renovating or decorating their homes. The decorum of your home will be dependent on how you maintain your kitchen area and bathroom. If they look shabby and disorganized then it creates a negative impact in the minds of the guests. Therefore it is important for you to keep it well organized. It will be best if you get Kitchen area & bathroom cabinets in situation these places are taken care of in a shabby method.

The main function of High quality kitchen cupboards and rest room cabinets is to assist people produces some room for storing. It is important for the cabinets to be spacious so that it can store the kitchen and bathroom accessories, nevertheless it ought to not cover all the area in the kitchen area or rest room.

There are lots of things which are to be arranged in the kitchen viz. soaps and shampoos, scrubs, etc. and so the cupboards should be bought appropriately. The dimension of the cabinets is dependent on the dimension of the rest room. Usually maintain in mind that the dimension and the construction of the cabinets ought to be proportional to the size of the rest room. The cupboards ought to not be big enough to make it inconvenient for individuals to move. Meticulously measure the area before you choose on cupboards and fit them in your bathroom.

Solid Advice For Buying The Right Health Insurance

TIP! If you are considering catastrophic health insurance, do your homework first. Make sure it covers the catastrophic events that you?re worried about.

A lot of people are discouraged from obtaining health insurance due to the high costs. With so many different insurance plans out there, it is hard to decide which one is best for you. This article helps you increase your health insurance knowledge so that you can better choose the best policy for you.

TIP! Are you unsure about something regarding the policy that you hold with your health insurance company? You can easily get answers with a phone call. Your health insurance company most likely has a customer service call center where you can talk to someone regarding your policy.

Watch your bills. Even with health insurance you will get bills that you did not expect. Prescription medications especially can add up to a significant expense that you may not have factored in to your out-of-pocket costs. Some doctors only prescribe brand-name medication without regard for the cost because they haven?t considered the generic version. Be sure to shop around. The price of medication can be different at each pharmacy.

TIP! If you have just graduated from college and want health insurance, consider these options. You may be able to get health insurance from your employer, if you have one.

When you are ready to switch your health plans, keep diligent records of every expense that is medically relevant to you. Do not forget to include the out-of-pocket expenses that you provide for your dependents as well as for yourself.

Figure out whether your records are being transferred as per legal mandates. If they are, you can request a copy for free, once a year.

TIP! Any coverage has exceptions loopholes, including your own health insurance plan. Read every page of the policy, so you won?t be surprised when the company tells you that something isn?t covered.

Keep in mind that insurance is something that?s regulated state-by-state, so you cannot purchase insurance from another state because of interstate commerce laws. Always make sure that you know which doctors and hospitals are covered by your plan. Each insurer is different, so read the fine print before you buy.

TIP! There are often plans at your provider network which allow lower premiums and reduced cost medical cards. With this discounted card you can visit doctors inside the company?s network, and receive reduced cost healthcare if you have a low income.

Health insurance policies can be manipulated to replace services you don?t use, with ones that are more beneficial to you. You can pick if you want to include co-pays on doctors visits, dental, vision or prescriptions. The more benefits that are included in your policy, the higher your premium will be.

TIP! Catastrophic health insurance is good for those who can?t afford ordinary, comprehensive insurance but need something in the event of a significant life altering event. This type of policy will also provide benefits to your overall health care portfolio in that you will be protected if extreme situations arise.

Try the ?free look? selection. This will enable you to use the policy for between 10 and 30 days, and literally test it out. If you decide you no longer want the plan, you may return it within that period of time and receive a refund.

TIP! Ask your health insurer what sort of wellness benefits they offer. Most of today?s top insurers are giving you great benefits for staying fit.

Keep in mind that health insurance companies are in business to make a profit; sometimes they seem to target those who do not have all the information they need about what kind of coverage is available. Utilize the advice within this article when obtaining a health insurance policy. It will save you a significant amount of time, and you will also save money in the

Magical, Fulfilling Relationships, Part II - Have a Magnificent Day!

Do you have the kind of relationships you want?
When you are with someone you are attracted to are you present in the moment with them?
Do you fully associate to the joy and fulfillment available?

I know it seems like a simple question, but most people are so busy thinking about things while they are with someone else.? Like, what am I going to say, do they like me, when should I make my move?? Does this sound familiar? Maybe you have your own questions or chatter.? I am amazed at how many people are texting and playing with their cell phones while with another person.

My question to you is, if you are busy thinking about anything when you are with the person you are with and maybe even attracted to, how can you be fully present with them?? Because if you are thinking, or concerned about how it?s going, then you are not really engaged in your energy to being with the other person.? Magic happens in those special, little moments that most people miss because they are busy thinking or worried about how they are doing.

That?s why this picture is a great reminder?are you in the past, present or future when you are asking someone for a date or with them spending ?quality time.?? Maybe your thinking about something you have to do later.? Maybe something from earlier the day is nagging at you.? Remember, the point of greatest power is always the present moment.

So how important is it for you to be present to experience true communication, clarity and connect with another person?? In addition to being present, how important is active listening when you are with another person?? Active listening or being fully present when someone is speaking is listening from the point of view of the speaker.? It does not mean trying to finish their sentences while they are speaking, or figure out what you are going to say, or trying to come up with something cool to impress them.? Do you see how easy it is to be distracted or occupied when you are actually wanting to be with someone or make a good impression?

How can you create wonderful, meaningful, fun, passionate relationships with someone if you are not really there with them?? What do you think the other person is feeling when they sense you are not really listening to them or are not connecting with them?? Maybe they think you do not really like them?? How often do you think these factors affect the quality of your relationships and outcomes?

By the way, these patterns do not just affect romantic relationships.? Look at how they affect family interactions between parents and their children.? How about between relatives?? Doesn?t the quality of your communication affects everyone in your life, especially you.? What would happen if you were present and really communicated with your children and taught them by example?

Take a look at your business relationships ? jobs, interviews, opportunities, contracts, sales, training, merger, etc. ? they all can be lost or gained by the quality of being present, and true listening skills.? What about body language, tone and words?? Do you see that communication is made up of so many nuances and components that can either enhance or destroy potential outcomes and relationships?

What if you could improve the quality of your communication?
What if you could learn powerful information to be more present and become a good listener?
What if you could become a master communicator?
How would this change your life, your business and your success?

These subjects and more along with great ideas and solutions can be found in Ariel and Shya Kanes? new book, ?How to Have A Match Made in Heaven.?? The Kanes have been communication specialists for decades and have coached and consulted thousands of individuals, couples and companies.? People who work with Ariel & Shya Kane become successful and even more successful.? Their new book comes out September 4th -? find out about an exciting special promotion offered only on this day with added benefits at? http://www.matchmadeinheavenbook.com/bookpromo/

Ariel & Shya Kane live the principles in their book.? They have been teaching and sharing this information for a long time and it is field tested!? The question is not does it work, the question is will you get your hands on this key, powerful information and tools and use them in your life.? The only way to succeed is by taking action and discovering your own truth of what works best for you.? If you want more joy, more intimacy, more sex, relationships that grow deeper and more wonderful over time, then do not miss this amazing book!

This information works in all areas of communication and relationships, so when applied in a business or professional setting the results are extraordinary and lead to greater teamwork, increased productivity and profitability.

Their book is full of endorsements by very successful people in all fields.

?In an era of technological revolutions affecting how we work and how we communicate, the Kanes are creating a revolution in how we live.?

The Disadvantages Of List Building

Too many people blog about the advantages of list building but very few talk about its disadvantages. Before you start building your own list, it?s important that you know the disadvantages.

1) List building is costly

When you first started in internet marketing, there are 3 things you are always advised to do. 1) Get a domain name, 2) get a server, and 3) get an autoresponder.

The first two are unavoidable, but autoresponder? Think again.

A decent autoresponder service like aweber.com will cost you $19.90/month for up to 500 subscribers. That?s 4 cents per subscriber per month.

How much juice can you squeeze from the same 500 subscribers every month?

The truth is your list will die faster than you think, not literally of course, but they will ignore your emails. It?s a blessing if they unsubscribe, because that means you can free up some space for more subscribers. But often, they simply remain in the list but ignore your emails. That?s bad because you are paying 4 cents every month for each of them!

If you are just starting out and still learning the ropes, and you want to build a list, I strongly suggest that you get a self-hosted autoresponder script, such as our MYOB listbuilder script which you can download free from your account. If your list grows too big, which is a good thing, you can always invest in a better script and a better hosting server.

2) List building is costly!

Even if you use a self-hosted autoresponder script, list building is still not free. It will cost you time, which is the most expensive thing in the world!

If you want to build relationship with your list, you will have to communicate with them via blog or newsletter. That will take you time to prepare.

If you don?t care about building relationship and simply want to flood them with deals and promotions, you will still have to spend time in finding those deals and preparing those emails.

You can set up autoresponder emails that last for years, but those contents will be outdated soon and you?ll still have to change the content every now and then.

The same amount of time you use to do all that could otherwise be used to create more websites or systems that can run on autopilot and make you more money automatically.

Having said that, nothing is really maintenance free. You just have to plan your list building campaign wisely so that it will not end up taking too much of your time.

So, should I build a list?

My purpose of sharing with you about the disadvantages of list building is not to discourage you from building lists, but to get you better prepared for what is going to come.

As I explained in this article, the key to building a lasting business is to keep building assets. And your list is your asset.

In fact, the challenge now is not just to build a list but to build a community. List building is just the first step.

Elderly with Heart Risk Factors May Be More Dementia-Proof

60-Second Science

Older individuals with high cholesterol and C-reactive protein levels probably have protective genes, allowing their brains to stay healthy in spite of their heart risks. Christopher Intagliata reports

More 60-Second Science

A lot of things that are bad for your heart can also hurt your brain. High cholesterol, for example, contributes to heart disease. And it ups your risk of Alzheimer's and dementia. Another heart and brain hazard is called C-reactive protein, or CRP. It?s a marker for inflammation in your body. High levels are associated with heart disease and cognitive decline.

Unless, that is, you're over 75. Because in a study of nearly 300 elderly men, researchers found that the guys with the highest levels of CRP were just half as likely to have siblings or parents with dementia?which bodes well for them. Those results are in the journal Neurology. [Jeremy M. Silverman et al., C-reactive protein and familial risk for dementia]

Another study found the same counterintuitive link between high cholesterol and better memory function in folks in their 80s. [R West et al, Better memory functioning associated with higher total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in very elderly subjects without the apolipoprotein e4 allele, American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, 2008]

It's not that these things suddenly become good for your brain later in life. Instead, these older individuals and their families probably have genes protecting them against these risk factors, allowing them to stay healthy in spite of high cholesterol and CRP. The next step, the researchers say, is to zero in on those dementia-proof genes. So maybe more of us can access that protection.

Nigeria to start $1B sovereign wealth fund

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) ? Officials say Nigeria will launch a $1 billion sovereign wealth fund in the coming months to invest some of the nation's oil revenue.

Nigeria's Finance Ministry made the announcement Tuesday. It said the board managing the fund will be led by Mahey Rasheed, a board member at Nigeria's First Bank PLC. Uche Orji of UBS will serve as the fund's managing director and CEO.

Nations use sovereign wealth funds to invest in stocks or securities. Nigerian authorities pushed for the creation of a sovereign wealth fund as a means to better save the billions of dollars the nation annually earns annual from oil revenues. Opaque budgeting and corruption sees much of the money siphoned away.

Some politicians have criticized the fund, saying more money should go to Nigeria's states.

(AP) ? Back at the site of her greatest victory, Samantha Stosur looked like a champion again, not the player who has often struggled this year.

The Australian began the defense of her U.S. Open title Monday with a dominant win, needing 51 minutes to beat 64th-ranked Petra Martic 6-1, 6-1 in the tournament's first match at Arthur Ashe Stadium before rain suspended play for more than two hours.

"As soon as I got here, it was just a good feeling and excitement to be back to a city that obviously brought me so much last year," Stosur said.

The last time Stosur played on this court, she stunned Serena Williams in the 2011 final at Flushing Meadows for her first Grand Slam title. But in so many ways, that 6-2, 6-3 victory was starting to feel as if it happened much more than a year ago.

In 2012, Stosur had lost in the first round in front of the home fans at the Australian Open. She lost in the second round at Wimbledon, then again in the first round at the London Olympics.

Sandwiched in between, she made a run to the semifinals of the French Open, but fell apart by committing 21 unforced errors in the third set of her loss to Sara Errani.

"Today kind of carried on from exactly how I was feeling last year," Stosur said. "Hopefully that's a good omen. ... Last year I did feel that comfort out there and nothing bothered me; today was along the same lines."

Despite her status as defending champion, Stosur, seeded seventh this year, is not considered one of the favorites coming into Flushing Meadows.

British sports books have her listed at 28-1 to repeat, same as Venus Williams, who has a 1-2 record in Grand Slams in 2012, and behind No. 4 seed Serena Williams, No. 3 Maria Sharapova, No. 1 Victoria Azarenka and four others.

On Monday against Martic, who withdrew from the Olympics with a left foot injury, Stosur won the first 19 points, five away from a golden set, before the streak ended on a double-fault.

"It pops into your head and you think, 'Oh, that would be cool,'" Stosur said of winning a set without dropping a point.

She was still nearly perfect, with 22 winners and 10 aces. Stosur didn't face any break points.

Other players starting Monday included third-seeded Andy Murray of Britain, coming off his Olympic gold medal at the London Olympics. He was facing Alex Bogomolov Jr. of Russia. Top-seeded Roger Federer plays American Donald Young in the night session.

Also playing in Arthur Ashe Stadium are No. 3 Maria Sharapova, against Melinda Czink of Hungary, and No. 23 Kim Clijsters, opening the final tournament of her career with a first-round match against American Victoria Duval. Clijsters missed last year with an injury, but has won the tournament the past three times she's entered ? in 2005, 2009 and 2010.

The Williams sisters, No. 2 Novak Djokovic and No. 20 Andy Roddick, the 2003 champion, are among those who start later in the week.

16 Movies To Watch This Fall | People's Critic: Film Reviews ...

It?s that time of the year again when the days get shorter, kids go back to school, and football dominates the weekend. It?s also time for a new crop of movies to dominate the theaters from September-December. 2012 has been a fantastic year for film, but we aren?t finished yet.

This Fall we?ve got Hobbits, time traveling hitmen, more Lincoln, a disgruntled video game character, and the return of 007. Here are those plus a few other films to put on your calendar.

*All synopsis are courtesy of IMDB*

Looper
Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Jeff Daniels
Director: Rian Johnson
Synopsis: In 2072, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent 30 years into the past, where a hired gun awaits. Someone like Joe, who one day learns the mob wants to ?close the loop? by transporting back Joe?s future self.
Why I?m Excited: Outside of Lebron James, Joseph Gordon Levitt is having the best year ever. Looper follows JGL?s outstanding performance in The Dark Knight Rises and we?ll see him later this fall in Steven Spielberg?s Lincoln. All he?s missing is an Olympic gold medal.
Looper teams JGL with Bruce Willis (my action hero dad), sci-fi, time travel, and the beautiful Emily Blunt ? that?s a recipe for awesome. If that?s not enough for you, the trailer has enough special effects eye candy to wow any moviegoer. I can?t wait.
9/28

The Master
Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
Synopsis: A Naval veteran arrives home from war unsettled and uncertain of his future ? until he is tantalized by The Cause and its charismatic leader.
Why I?m Excited: The Master had a buzz since its preproduction stage due to its similarities with Scientology. Paul Thomas Anderson & Co. have insisted The Master is not about Scientology, but that hasn?t stopped people from speculating.
It?s good to see Joaquin Phoenix back acting after his bizarre documentary I?m Still Here. Phoenix is still a superb actor and looks to be bringing his ?A? game in The Master. I?m hoping Hoffman?s performance is somewhere between Owen Davian in MI:3 and Andy in Before the Devil Knows You?re Dead. That would make me happy. Very happy. Scientology parallels aside, The Master looks delightfully creepy.

9/14

Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best
Starring: Ryan O?Nan, Michael Weston, Ariell Kebbel
Director: Ryan O?Nan
Synopsis: A singer-songwriter hits the road with a self-appointed music revolutionary.
Why I?m Excited: Ryan O?Nan wrote, directed, and stars in this comedy about two musicians. Anytime you can mix comedy and music, I?m all in. The quirky/awkward jokes mixed with heartwarming songs should make for a fun film. With all the serious Oscar worthy films, Brooklyn Brothers looks like the perfect change-of-pace film for the fall.
9/21

Argo
Starring: Ben Affleck, Alan Arkin, John Goodman, and Bryan Cranston
Director: Ben Affleck
Synopsis: As the Iranian revolution reaches a boiling point, a CIA ?exfiltration? specialist concocts a risky plan to free six Americans who have found shelter at the home of the Canadian ambassador.
Why I?m Excited: A few months ago I talked to someone who I?ll refer to as ?Movie Person Who Sees Movies Early?. When I asked what movie they saw that I should be excited for their response was, ?Argo?.
Ben Affleck may have found his calling as a director. So far his directorial resume includes Gone Baby Gone and The Town. Not too shabby if you ask me. I almost able to forgive him for Daredevil and Gigli. Also, I?m in on any film that?s based on a top secret story from the 1970?s. It?s a history lesson and a spy story all wrapped in one.
10/12

Taken 2
Starring: Liam Neeson, Famke Janssen, Maggie Grace, Rade Sherbedgia
Director: Oliver Megaton
Synopsis: In Istanbul, retired CIA operative Bryan Mills and his wife are taken hostage by the father of a kidnapper Mills killed while rescuing his daughter.
Why I?m Excited: Bryan Mills is back! He?ll be shooting, killing, talking to people in a low voice, and giving his daughter instructions. Taken was such a great movie, I wouldn?t mind sitting through it again. I?ll watch Liam Neeson in anything that doesn?t involve the words ?Wrath? or ?Titans?. Will Taken 2 be as good as the first? I doubt it. Will it be incredibly entertaining? Yes! Yes! Yes!
10/5

Killing Them Softly
Starring: Brad Pitt, Ray Liotta, and Richard Jenkins
Director: Andrew Dominik
Synopsis: Jackie Cogan is a professional enforcer who investigates a heist that went down during a mob-protected poker game.
Why I?m Excited: The gritty trailer with Brad Pitt and his shotgun makes the film look fascinating. To be honest, that?s all I really needed to see. There?s already rumblings about how good this movie is. The Academy may have to make room for this thriller
10/19

Life of Pi
Starring: Suraj Sharma, irrfan Khan, Adil Hussain
Director: Ang Lee
Synopsis: The story of an Indian boy named Pi, a zookeeper?s son who finds himself in the company of a hyena, zebra, orangutan, and a Bengal tiger after a shipwreck sets them adrift in the Pacific Ocean.
Why I?m Excited: It looks like critically acclaimed director Ang Lee is back in his sweet spot with Life of Pi. The film adaptation of the 2001 novel looks like the most visually stunning film of the year. The film Ang Lee once thought was ?unmakeable? is now a reality. The visual effects and gripping story about a boy lost at sea will be enough to get me in the theaters. And I?m secretly hoping for a 3D Bengal tiger attack.

11/21

Wreck-It Ralph
Starring: John C. Reilly, Jack McBrayer, Jayne Lynch, Sarah Silverman
Director: Rich Moore
Synopsis: The bad-guy character in a classic game who longs to be a hero brings trouble to his entire arcade after sneaking into a new first-person shooter game and unleashing a deadly enemy.
Why I?m Exited: You know who?s more excited than me? 11 year old me. He?s pumped and telling people Wreck-It Ralph is his favorite movie. The who?s-who of video games in the hands of Rich Moore (Simpsons, Futurama) has the potential to be hilariously entertaining. I?m looking forward to all the cameos as Ralph jumps from game to game ? especially Q*Bert.

Silver Linings Playbook
Starring: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro
Director: David O Russell
Synopsis: After a stint in a mental institution, former teacher Pat Solitano moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own.
Why I?m Excited: Two of Hollywood?s darlings team up for an unusual love story about two people dealing with mental illness. The two of them can do no wrong ? Bradley Cooper continues to be one of the hardest working men and Hollywood and Jennifer Lawrence is putting people on notice that she?s more than just a pretty face. The two of them are an unlikely paring, but I like it.

Lincoln
Starring: Daniel Day-Lewis, David Srathairn, Sally Field, John Hawkes, Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Director: Steven Spielberg
Synopsis: The sixteenth President of the United States guides the North to victory during the Civil War.
Why I?m Excited: Sadly, there are no zombies, but it looks like they?ll be a lot of Civil War footage in this film. It?s amazing how much Daniel Day-Lewis looks like Abe in the teaser posters for the film. Seeing Daniel Day-Lewis in a stovepipe hat might give me goose bumps. I?m hoping to learn more about Lincoln like he really enjoyed skeeball or he was Honest-ish Abe.

Skyfall
Starring: Daniel Craig, Helen McCrory, Javier Bardem
Synopsis: Bond?s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her.
Why I?m Excited: I love James Bond. I?ve loved James Bond ever since I saw Moonraker as a kid. I even love Daniel Craig as a more broodish Bond. This is the film I?m most excited to see this fall. What?s not to like? It?ll have Bond girls, gadgets, cars, tuxedos, and big action scenes. The trailer is fantastic and Javier Bardem looks like a madman with his boy band hair.

And there?s this exchange:
[Bond tied to a chair]
Bond: Everybody needs a hobby
Raoul Silva: What?s yours?
Bond: Resurrection.

Flight
Starring: Denzel Washington, John Goodman, Bruce Greenwood, Don Cheadle
Director: Robert Zemeckis
Synopsis: An airline pilot saves a flight from crashing, but an investigation into the malfunctions reveals something troubling
Why I?m Excited: This is Zemeckis first live action film since 2000?s Castaway. Before that he had What Lies Beneath, Contact, and Forrest Gump. In the words of Larry David, ?Pretty, pretty good.? I would?ve seen anyone in a film from Zemeckis but Flight has the Denzel and Don Cheadle combo ? not to mention the breathtaking shot of Denzel saving the plane from crashing.

Jack Reacher
Starring: Tom Cruise, Robert Duvall, Rosamund Pike, Werner Herzog
Director: Christopher Mc Quarrie
Synopsis: A homicide investigator digs deeper into a case involving a trained military sniper who shot five random victims. Based on a book in Lee Child?s crime series.
Why I?m Excited: Tom Cruise running. Tom Cruise beating people to a pulp. Tom Cruise doing his own stunts. Tom Cruise driving fast. Tom Cruise doing more running.
12/21

Zero Dark Thirty
Starring: Joel Edgerton, Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Kyle Chandler
Director: Kathryn Bigelow
Synopsis: A chronicle of the decade-long hunt for al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden after the 9/11 attacks, and his death at the hands of the Navy SEAL Team 6 in May, 2011.
Why I?m Excited: I love everybody involved in this project. Is it too soon? Maybe. Will it be cool to have Kyle ?Coach Taylor? Chandler back in my life? Absolutely. If Bigelow can bring the same intensity she brought in The Hurt Locker, we?ll be in for a treat.
12/9

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Starring: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Andy Serkis
Director: Peter Jackson
Synopsis: A curious Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, journeys to the Lonely Mountain with a vigorous group of Dwarves to reclaim a treasure stolen from them by the dragon Smaug.
Why I?m Excited: It?s the Hobbit. That is all.
12/14

Django Unchained
Starring: Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington
Director: Quentin Tarantino
Synopsis: With the help of his mentor, a slave-turned-bounty hunter sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner.
Why I?m Excited: Two words: Leonardo DiCaprio. If there?s one thing Tarantino does well it?s villains. I think he?s going to bring the best out of DiCaprio as the evil plantation owner Calvin Candie. I?m sure the rest of the cast will bring it, but I?ve got my Oscar nomination ready for Leo.
