? ? Lynn English baseball coach Joe Caponigro has been reaching out to Division 1 college baseball coaches for the past two seasons, trying to spread the gospel of his young star pitcher/first baseman Ben Bowden.
The mission paid off.
Earlier this evening, Bowden ended the recruitment by announcing via twitter that he will attend Vanderbilt in the fall of 2013. The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder won six games and struck out 82 batters in 51 2?3 innings this past season. Bowden pitched a perfect game against Marblehead and had a game-winning home run against Gloucester. The Bulldogs? 2011 team MVP, he batted .394 with two home runs, 21 RBI and finished with 17 extra-base hits.
?I couldn?t be happier for Ben and his family,? said Caponigro. ?This is something Ben has wanted for a long time and he put in the time and effort. It just goes to show you if you work hard enough, you can get there.?
?I have been contacting a lot of people since Ben?s sophomore year and one of the people I spoke to was (Vanderbilt coach) Tim Corbin. I know he?s seen Ben compete up here as well as tournaments down in Florida and Georgia. This is an exciting thing for the city of Lynn, the Lynn English baseball program and Ben?s family. We couldn?t be more happier for Ben.?
