Disneyland Adventures for Kinect

As a travelogue, Disneyland Adventure ($49.99) for Kinect works brilliantly. Most of Walt Disney's orginal theme park is present in an almost 1:1 representation on your widescreen TV. Disneyland Adventure for Kinect lets you walk virtually through the park, taking in the ambiance. In this sandbox game for the family, you can choose to follow quests that Mickey Mouse and the rest of the Disney gang give you, which can include getting autographs, taking pictures of characters and landmarks, and finding items that relate to each character. Or you can simply walk around the park, taking in the architecture and the realistic representation of all the exteriors of the attractions.

Virtual Rides, No Lines
Some of the rides and attractions also work, too; notably rides like the completely accurate Dumbo ride (you go up, you go down, you go round and round). Other "attractions" are merely minigames, including fan favorites like Peter Pan's Flight and Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage. The minigames are moderately fun and easy to play, but it would've been more fun to actually "ride" these rides.

The rest of the game is essentially an Easter egg and item hunt, with a plethora of virtual Disney items to collect like different autograph books, pins, T-shirts for your virtual avatar, and other items. In this way, it's sort of like a real visit to Disneyland, though these items will only hurt your virtual wallet.

Another plus is the fact that you won't spend hours in line, like you would in Anaheim. Disney tried its best to avoid having the park look like an empty virtual world from Tron: there are plenty of background people populating the parks, and the audio sounds just like walking down Main Street USA in real life: the ambient sounds and background music add to the illusion. Also, the facades on the buildings and show pieces are spot on: for example you'd expect to see the Matterhorn in the distance from both Tomorrowland and Fantasyland, but it's hidden when you're walking through New Orleans Square. Again, the best thing is you won't be stuck behind a tour group at any point in your visit.

To navigate, you simply point your arm out in the direction you want to walk. It's simple, but it's also worth noting that your arm may get tired after an hour or two of virtually walking around. Thankfully, there is a voice-controlled menu to jump from location to location. Waving your arms or making a hugging motion with both hands lets you interact with the onscreen characters, and you can bring up a virtual camera with other set motions. The Kintect interface is somewhat intelligently mapped out, but there are times that you wish the controller could be used instead (particularly when navigating the park on a quest).

What's Missing
There are a few missing aspects to the true Disney Park experience: you won't be able to chow down on your favorite meals, virtually or not. There aren't many interiors to explore?the park is mostly what you can see from outside the rides. Also, a few attractions are missing, like Indiana Jones and Star Tours, as displaying those rides involve licensing rights with Lucasfilm.

Disneyland Adventures for Kinect is something you can knock out in a weekend, in the course of 10-20 hours or so. Microsoft and Frontier Dev, Ltd. couldn't make it too hard considering the potential audience of 3-93 year olds. That said, Disney Parks fans certainly would want to pick this up, if only to be able to visit the happiest place on Earth 24/7.

Minimally invasive treatments that will change modern medicine featured at SIR's 37th Annual Scientific Meeting March 2429 in San Francisco, Calif.

FAIRFAX, Va.The Society of Interventional Radiology will feature minimally invasive scientific advances and new discoveries that may change the way dozens of diseases are treated at its 37th Annual Scientific Meeting March 24-29 at San Francisco's Moscone Center.

More than 5,000 physicians, scientists and allied health professionals are expected to attend this premier interventional radiology event. The meeting's theme, "IR Evidence," reflects a growing commitment to develop and prove care-changing advances in dozens of practice areas important to the specialty. Nearly 400 scientific presentations and posters substantiating patient outcomes in interventional radiology research and approximately 150 technical exhibits and product demonstrations will be showcased during the 2012 Annual Scientific Meeting.

"This year's Annual Scientific Meeting theme is 'IR Evidence,' and it is the Society of Interventional Radiology's goal to critically examine the current evidence in the specialty and identify those areas where more data is necessary," stated Mahmood K. Razavi, M.D., Annual Scientific Meeting chair. "Because innovation still requires creativity, don't miss 'Extreme IR, where the panel explores solutions to unusual and seemingly undoable cases. The 'Care-changing Clinical Trials' plenary will examine important recent discoveries that may change the way interventional radiology benefits patients," added Razavi, an interventional radiologist at St. Joseph Vascular Institute in Orange, Calif.

"The scientific sessions at this year's Annual Scientific Meeting will include studies that highlight current research relating to the care of patients with cancer, peripheral arterial disease, stroke and venous disease and the potential role of treating chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency, or CCSVI, in patients with multiple sclerosis," noted Gary P. Siskin, M.D., FSIR, Annual Scientific Meeting scientific program chair. "The meeting's fast-paced evidence-based debate session will feature team members from across the country, including Cornell, Miami and Northwestern and from as far away as Auckland, New Zealand, who will battle through several rounds of questions designed to test the participants on their knowledge in many different areas including the history of interventional radiology, imaging, devices, techniques and patient management," added Siskin, chair of the radiology department at Albany Medical Center, N.Y.

Carolyn M. Clancy, M.D., director, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, delivers the keynote during IR Economics: Overcoming Challenges and Delivering Quality Care. Clancy is expected to talk about the role of evidence-based medicine in patient care, national research priorities and how interventional radiology can support the national research agenda.

The meeting will include two symposia: In-depth Endovascular Management of PAD, designed to cover a broad range of peripheral arterial disease topics, and Comprehensive Management of Superficial and Deep Venous Disease, which will focus on interventional radiology within the venous system. This symposium, significant as March is National DVT Awareness Month, features moderators Mark J. Garcia, M.D., FSIR, chair of SIR's Venous Service Line, and Robert J. Min, M.D., FSIR. Siskin will examine the pathophysiology of CCSVI (a blockage in the veins that drain blood from the brain and spinal cord and return it to the heart) and the factors supporting its consideration as a contributing factor in multiple sclerosis.

Care-changing Clinical Trials promises to deliver on results of research that could forever change the landscape of interventional radiology. In Interventional Oncology: Technical and Clinical Controversies, Riccardo Lencioni, M.D., Ph.D., and Michael C. Soulen, M.D., FSIR, will explore the impact of interventional oncology. A categorical course moderated by Kieran J. Murphy, M.D., FSIR, features leading international spine and bone intervention experts who will discuss the future of spine intervention and the interventionalists' role as inventors, creators and scientists. Ziv J Haskal, M.D., FSIR, will coordinate Extreme IR, that will showcase the exciting cross-platform/cross-disease abilities of the specialty to define new solutionsoften on the spot. Jeff H. Geschwind, M.D., FSIR, will moderate the featured symposium, IO 2012: What the Interventional Oncologist Needs to Know, a look at new and targeted chemotherapy agents, tailoring therapy based on biomarkers, communicating with cancer patients and tumor response as well as future trends.

As the society's 28th Dr. Charles T. Dotter lecturer, John A. Kaufman, M.D., M.S., FSIR, will deliver "IR 360," during the plenary Integrated Practices and IR: Opportunities for Program Development. Kaufman will explore the many ways interventional radiology is seen by patients, competing disciplines and policy makers. He will illustrate some of the ways in which this knowledge can prepare interventional radiology for the future.

The SIR 2012 Gold Medals, awarded to members who have helped ensure the future of interventional radiology by advancing the quality of medicine and patient care, will be presented during the annual Film Panel, a popular SIR event where teams of interventional radiologists from around the world compete in their knowledge of the history of interventional radiology, imaging, devices, techniques and patient management. The SIR Foundation Awards and Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology Editor's Awards will also be presented during this panel.

About the Society of Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiologists are physicians who specialize in minimally invasive, targeted treatments. They offer the most in-depth knowledge of the least invasive treatments available coupled with diagnostic and clinical experience across all specialties. They use X-ray, MRI and other imaging to advance a catheter in the body, such as in an artery, to treat at the source of the disease internally. As the inventors of angioplasty and the catheter-delivered stent, which were first used in the legs to treat peripheral arterial disease, interventional radiologists pioneered minimally invasive modern medicine. Today, interventional oncology is a growing specialty area of interventional radiology. Interventional radiologists can deliver treatments for cancer directly to the tumor without significant side effects or damage to nearby normal tissue.

Many conditions that once required surgery can be treated less invasively by interventional radiologists. Interventional radiology treatments offer less risk, less pain and less recovery time compared to open surgery. Visit www.SIRweb.org.

The Society of Interventional Radiology is holding its 37th Annual Scientific Meeting March 24-29 at Moscone Center, San Francisco, Calif. The theme of the meeting is "IR Evidence," chosen to reflect interventional radiology's gathering, presenting and discussing results of care-changing investigations.

Representatives of the media are invited to join interventional radiology professionals as they share research, learn about the latest breakthroughs and trends in interventional radiology and discuss important issues in the field that have been making news. Press registration is complimentary to credentialed media. For press registration only, contact Ellen Acconcia, (703) 460-5582, eacconcia@SIRweb.org, or Maryann Verrillo, (703) 460-5572, mverrillo@SIRweb.org. Press representatives may also register online at www.SIRmeeting.org. SIR will hold two scientific press conferences that will feature an overview of the latest research and discoveries in the world of interventional radiology. The press conferences are scheduled for 9-10:30 a.m. (Pacific) on Sunday, March 25, and Monday, March 26.

Local interviews, medical illustrations and broadcast-quality video footage are available by contacting SIR's communications department staff: Ellen Acconcia, SIR communications manager/practice areas, eacconcia@SIRweb.org, (703) 460-5582, or Maryann Verrillo, SIR director of communications and public relations, mverrillo@SIRweb.org, (703) 460-5572.

Pressure builds for civilian drone flights at home (AP)

[unable to retrieve full-text content]AP - Heads up: Drones are going mainstream. Civilian cousins of the unmanned military aircraft that have tracked and killed terrorists in the Middle East and Asia are in demand by police departments, border patrols, power companies, news organizations and others wanting a bird's-eye view that's too impractical or dangerous for conventional planes or helicopters to get.

Raspberry Pi wears a new Fedora (video)

If you've been keeping an eye on this tasty little computer, you'll know it's a pretty exciting concept already. To further sweeten the deal, it just got its own version of Fedora. A special "remix" edition has been ported over to the micro-machine by a team at Seneca College. Although there's already a Debian release for the diminutive device, the project's official blog states that Fedora Remix is the distribution it'll be recommending to users. The OS image fits on a 2GB memory card, and comes complete with a GUI, programming and system administration tools, web browser and other essential apps to get you going. If you want to see the Pi in action, there's a video after the break demonstrating the OS, along with a look at that user interface. As for that February 20th release date, sadly that seems less reliable.

Real Estate News

A metric we like to use at Your Castle Real Estate to gauge the strength of the market in the upcoming few months is the number of showings that have occurred per listing per month in the current market. Put simply ? the more showings per listing, the more interest there is from buyers to purchase a home (you can?t sell a house you don?t show!). It?s a very handy formula to determine what the sales volume will be in the following few months. For example, during the period before the tax credit of 2010 expired (Jan. ? April, 2010) there were 8.8 showings per listing per month, which translated into strong demand for properties and a lot of sales the following couple of months (turns out if you pay people to buy a house they?ll buy a house!).

Immediately after the tax credit expired buyer interest plummeted and there were only 4.7 showings per listing per month. This of course preceded a dramatic drop in home sales post tax credit. The lack of buyer interest continued in the period Oct. ? Dec. 2010 when there were only 5.2 showings per listing per month. In the past year this number has creeped back into the 7-8 range, accurately predicting reasonable but not overwhelming demand for homes.

Fast forward to the present time and something very dramatic has occurred. In January, 2011 there were 11.2 showings per listing!? This is an extraordinarily high number of showings. It?s even more remarkable because it occurred in January, a traditionally slow month. ?This tells me that an unprecedented number of buyers are out looking at properties and, if history is any guide, this should translate into a high number of closings in March and April.

Over time, this metric has been a very accurate predictor of future closings. It will be fun to monitor the market in the months ahead and I?ll be sure to report back how closely it predicted the upcoming housing market!

Buyers

The single most important number for a homebuyer is your credit FICO score. For the good or the bad of it your FICO plays a major role in your ability to finance your home purchase. Therefore, it?s critical you understand what it is and what you can do to improve it. In a nutshell, your credit score is a snapshot taken by the three leading credit bureaus, TransUnion, Equifax and Experian, to help lenders determine what sort of credit risk you are. The lower the risk, the better the terms of your loan.

Your FICO is a number between 300 and 850 and is calculated by a complex algorithm assessing your past credit history. Most home lenders will consider a score over 700 to be excellent while scores below 600 are considered poor. The better the score the more credit will be extended, at better terms, with a lower interest rate. The best credit terms are extended to consumers with scores above 740. Therefore, it?s critical to understand what your FICO is and what you can do to improve your score. When I work with buyers I help them understand the inputs to their score so they can work to improve them. I can?t think of a better investment in your future than to spend a little time working on your FICO score. Here are a few tips I give my clients:

  1. Don?t max out your credit cards. Even running high balances can severely impact your FICO.
  2. Continue paying your bills on time.
  3. Don?t apply for new credit or cancel an old card because length of credit helps.
  4. Pay down high balances.
  5. Dispute and resolve any inaccurate items in your credit report.

Sellers

As we enter the peak buying season of late spring and early summer, sellers are well positioned to take advantage of the market. We are currently at a 12-year low in inventory, with the least inventory clustered on the lower end of the market. While a ?normal? market will have about 6 months of inventory, the Denver Metro area currently has only 3.1 months of inventory. What this means for you as a seller is that there are not many choices for buyers. When I speak to my friends and clients I ask them whether they think it?s a seller?s market or a buyer?s market and universally they say it?s a buyer?s market. Not so! The truth is it?s a strong seller?s market because inventory is at historic lows and prices are rising in the under $300k segment. So if you?ve been wondering if this is a good time to sell give me a call so I can research your area and give you a custom report on how this market is impacting your home.

Investors

Recently, a study was performed to determine the Return on Investment (ROI) for a variety of home improvement projects. Not surprisingly, some projects paid back more than others. What?s interesting to note is that almost NO projects had a positive ROI. Here are some of the improvement projects and the cost recouped at resale:

Attic bedroom - (converting unfinished attic space into a bedroom with bathroom and shower) Cost recouped at resale: 73%

Minor kitchen remodel ? (including new cabinets and drawers, countertops, hardware, and appliances) Cost recouped at resale: 72.1%

Deck addition (wood) ? Cost recouped at resale: 70.1%

Siding replacement (vinyl) ? Cost recouped at resale: 69.5%

Replacing the entry door with a steel door ? Cost recouped at resale: 73%

The very low ROI on remodeling projects might surprise you but it?s a truism in the industry that you make your money when you buy the property. There is no substitute for finding a great deal and executing on it. In today?s low-inventory environment it?s more difficult than ever to find that deal but this is what I do! Let me know if you?d like me to show you how I find great properties for my clients.

Need of Cheap Eye Glasses

?

Some people move to the older age then most of them need eye sight glasses. Some people do not show to others or do not tell because they feel embarrassed. That is actually bad with eyes because their sight will become weaker and it is possible that their eyesight will go forever. There are some people, who take it as the extra wastage of money when thinking of buying the glasses. And some people do not want to wear single eye glasses while they like variation. But they do not need to worry because the cheap glasses for eye sight are also available.

If you are style conscious and want to buy cheap glasses on daily basis, you can buy frames of different styles. For studying in class you can use different glasses with different frames. For reading to studying, you should prefer to wear those glasses which make you feel more relaxed and you also feel convenient to wear them.

The glasses with the black frames are more suitable because those glasses are easy to wear and have more supporting area of frames. So, you will not feel any ambiguity for wearing the glasses. But in black thick frame glasses, you will not have the pleasant look. So those glasses are good for reading purposes only. While when you go for attending any dinner or party then you should wear the steel frame or frame of golden and silver color.

There are some frames that are available which are made of glass which also provide the nice look and are comfortable as well. But those cheap glasses need more care and you have to wear them very carefully and you cannot put them just anywhere.

The reason is that there are chances of cracks or breaking. If you are careless, the glasses can break. The other main fault of those glasses is that after the little use the look of those glasses will not be good. So, those glasses will expire sooner as compared to other glasses.

The glasses of black frame are more durable and once you buy them, you do not need to change them for few years. Those are cheap glasses and even if you buy at high rates, you will save money because you will not have to purchase glasses for a few years ahead. The steel frame glasses are also famous among the students because they want nice look and they are also style conscious. FCC plans to nix wireless network that may jam GPS (AP)

NEW YORK ? Federal officials plan to kill a proposal to build a new national high-speed wireless network after concluding it would in some cases jam personal-navigation and other GPS devices.

The Federal Communications Commission said it will seek public comment as early as Wednesday on revoking LightSquared's permit after a federal agency that coordinates wireless signals, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, concluded that there's no way to eliminate the risk of interference with GPS devices.

The FCC had seen LightSquared's proposal as a way to make more airwaves available to feed consumers' appetites for movies, music and games on a variety of mobile devices.

Makers of GPS devices and those who rely on them feared that GPS signals would suffer the way a radio station can get drowned out by a stronger broadcast in a nearby channel. The problem is that sensitive GPS receivers, designed to pick up relatively weak signals from space, could be overwhelmed by high-power signals from as many as 40,000 LightSquared transmitters on the ground. LightSquared planned to transmit on a frequency adjacent to that used by GPS.

When the FCC gave LightSquared tentative approval last year to build the network, it said the company wouldn't be allowed to start operations until the government was satisfied that any problems are addressed. LightSquared and the FCC had insisted the new network could co-exist with GPS systems.

After conducting tests, the NTIA said Tuesday that it found interference with dozens of personal-navigation devices and aircraft-control systems that rely on GPS.

The agency said that new technology in the future might mitigate the problems, but it would take time and money to replace GPS equipment already used extensively in the U.S. The NTIA, a branch of the Commerce Department, also said adjustments to LightSquared's network could cost billions of dollars and might not solve all of the problems.

LightSquared, which is based in Reston, Va., had no immediate comment Wednesday.

LightSquared had hoped to compete nationally with super-fast, fourth-generation wireless services being rolled out by AT&T, Verizon Wireless and other traditional wireless companies. It hadn't planned to sell directly to consumers. Rather, it would have provided network access to companies including Leap Wireless, parent of the Cricket phone service, and Best Buy, which planned to rebrand the service under its own name.

LightSquared is owned by Harbinger Capital Partners, a private-equity firm that made billions betting against subprime mortgages ahead of the collapse of the housing market.

Part of the problem stems from the fact that today's GPS devices have been designed to screen out low-power signals in the adjacent wireless spectrum used by LIghtSquared, not the high-power ones planned.

Public Knowledge, a group that advocates more wireless competition, said the FCC needs to improve GPS-receiver standards so that the LightSquared spectrum can be used to meet growing demand for wireless services.

In a research note, telecom analyst Christopher C. King of Stifel Nicolaus said the move should benefit traditional wireless companies such as AT&T and Verizon as well as two other companies whose spectrum holdings may become more valuable: Dish Network Corp. and Clearwire Corp.

Dish's stock gained 69 cents, or 2.4 percent, to $29.05 in afternoon trading. Clearwire gained a penny to $2.30 per share. AT&T Inc. fell 20 cents to $29.87 while Verizon Communications Inc. lost 21 cents to $37.83 per share.

Facebook links aren't Whitney Houston's autopsy

Jonathan Alcorn / Reuters file

A Los Angeles County Coroner's van exits the Beverly Hilton Hotel with the body of Whitney Houston, who died in a hotel room there on Saturday.

By Suzanne Choney

Think you're going to see video of Whitney Houston's autopsy because of a link you clicked on in Facebook? You won't, and if you click on the various links being shared around the social network, you could be biting on a scam, or worse ? possibly letting a program onto your computer that could do damage.

While we've mentioned some of the online scams?that started almost immediately after Houston's death Saturday, the latest, on Facebook, may appeal to the more vulnerable who feel they're safer within the confines of the social network. They're not.

As the public?? and Houston's family?? awaits the results of an autopsy on the beloved singer, the latest round of messages on Facebook tease that the video "reveals a shocking secret that explains her death." Sophos Security points to what a "typical" autopsy scam message looks like:

Sophos Security

"Clicking on the link will take your browser (to a dialog box) which appears to show a YouTube video embedded on what looks like a Facebook webpage," writes Graham Cluley on Sophos' Naked Security blog. "However, a message on the page says that the video cannot be played as your version of Adobe Flash needs to be updated."

Whether your version of Adobe Flash needs to be updated or not, don't click "Install."

"You should only ever download an update for your installation of Flash from the *real* Adobe website, so my recommendation would be (be) very wary about downloading any software that this bogus webpage might serve up to you, or any scam survey pages that it might direct you towards," writes Cluley, a senior technology consultant for Sophos.

We've seen these same kinds of scams before with the death of other popular stars, and even with villains. Last year, right after Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces, Facebook messages started springing up purporting to show video of his execution.

Egypt protesters demand justice over stadium deaths (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Angry Egyptian soccer fans protested at the general prosecutor's office on Wednesday in Cairo, demanding that authorities bring to court those responsible for soccer violence that left 74 people dead.

Fans and activists said they would take matters into their own hands unless justice was done, putting more pressure on ruling generals already facing public criticism for mismanaging the transition to democracy in the wake of the uprising that began a year ago.

"With our souls and blood, we will protect you martyrs," chanted a crowd of several thousand. "Down, down military rule."

Violence broke out on February 2 at the end of a match between the al-Masry team in the coastal city of Port Said and Cairo's visiting Al Ahly team, the most successful in Africa.

Witnesses said hundreds of al-Masry supporters surged across the pitch to the visitors' end, causing panicking Ahly fans to dash for the exit. Steel doors were bolted shut and dozens were crushed to death in the stampede.

Many of the victims were Al-Ahly's hardcore "ultra" fans, who regularly confront riot police at matches and have been at the front lines of protests that toppled former President Hosni Mubarak from power on February 11 last year.

Some critics of army rule suggested the violence was planned to create chaos and push people to support an extension of army rule.

A parliamentary inquiry found fans and lax security to blame, saying that instigators had used thugs and hardcore soccer fans to take "advantage of the tension surrounding the game to achieve some political gains".

"The report is still a preliminary one. Popular determination will force the final report to be very precise," said MP and member of the inquiry team Mohamed Abu Hamed.

TELEGRAPH As state funding dwindles, reliance on property taxes ...

Study: As state funding dwindles, reliance on property taxes increases By JAKE BERRY

CONCORD ? The economic recession and dwindling state aid are causing New Hampshire taxpayers to fund a larger portion of their municipal and school budgets through local property taxes, according to a study released this week.

Officials said the drop in financial support from Concord has forced them to make difficult decisions about spending at the local level.

?Everybody?s in the same boat,? said Charlotte Schweiss, chairwomen of the Hudson Budget Committee. The town has used general fund savings to offset the state cuts. ?We?re not getting what we?re owed as far as state-mandated programs.?

The Financing New Hampshire Cities and Towns report, released Monday by the N.H. Center for Public Policy Studies, found that in 2010, local property taxes made up on average 60 percent of city, town and school spending.

By comparison, in 2001, property taxes collected at the city and town level accounted for 56 percent of spending. Across the Nashua region and around New Hampshire, decreasing state aid has left budget planners struggling to contain costs.

?It?s becoming problematic. ?Towns are doing everything they can to cut back expenditures,? said Dennis Delay, an economist with the public policy center that helped author the study.

The study also found that while local property taxes are being relied on more for municipal spending, some towns are relying on it far more than others. While Milford funded 55 percent of its 2010 budget through property taxes, Hollis property taxes made up 82 percent of the town?s budget spending.

Early in the 2000s, it wasn?t state cuts that led to the greater dependency on property taxes. Rather, high property values left cities, towns and school districts flush with money to fund additional programs and services, Delay said.

?There were some pretty significant increases in spending which, frankly, were pretty easy to fund as long as property values were rising,? he said Monday.

Recently, the economic recession has slowed revenues coming in from the state government, leaving municipal and school officials to make up the difference themselves.

In 2010, state officials eliminated the $25 million shared revenue program, which divided money among New Hampshire cities and towns. In 2011, funding was cut to the state retirement program, first down from 30 percent to 25 percent, and then eliminated.

This left local budget planners to replace hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost revenue. While these actions fell outside the timeline of the public policy center?s study, it could be an indicator that the reliance on local property taxes may become even more lopsided.

Some local cities and towns have managed to survive in the face of the increased costs. In Nashua, local property taxes made up 64 percent of the budget spending in 2010 ? down from 69 percent in 2001, according to the study. Other towns, like Hudson, have used other revenue sources, such as increased motor-vehicle registrations, to offset some of the losses to state aid, officials said.

?I don?t think state funding has been the biggest factor (influencing our spending),? said Shawn Jasper, chairman of the Hudson Board of Selectmen, who also serves as majority leader in the state House of Representatives.

Still, other towns have been forced to look to layoffs and service cuts to offset the losses and maintain a stable tax rate.

In the Litchfield School District, for instance, administrators eliminated more than 20 positions last year, according to business administrator Steve Martin. In Merrimack, officials have cut more than 20 school positions, as well as two firefighters, among other spots, to maintain a stable tax rate.

?It?s affected the schools, the Fire Department, the Police Department, everywhere,? said Paul Micali, the town?s finance director. ?It?s been really hard.?

Moving forward, some economists are hopeful that, as the recession comes to an end, state officials will restore portions of the state funding.

?I really believe the worst is probably over for the state,? said Delay, of the public policy center.

Others are less optimistic, fearing that state officials won?t restore prior funding levels, leaving city, town and school officials to fend for themselves.

?My personal feeling, quite frankly, is you?re going to continue to see both the state and the federal government try to cut funding as much as possible,? said Martin, of the Litchfield School District. ?They both just have too much money that they need to spend and not enough revenue to offset it.?
