BREWSTER ? Students in the vacation Bible school at Cape Cod Bible Alliance Church learned about Paul and the shipwreck on Friday, a story that the teachers said illustrates the Bible verse, ?For God has not given us a spirit of fearfulness, but one of power, love and sound judgment.?
Meanwhile, not far from where students listened to this biblical story of Paul using faith to inspire calm during a storm, a chain-link fence guards the jagged concrete foundation of the 12,800-square-foot church destroyed by arson Nov. 30.
For 18 years, members of the church have held the annual summer children's program inside their air-conditioned building on Route 6A. But this year, as the plans for rebuilding move forward, they had to improvise and hold classes outside under tents.
Rebuilding plans are still in the design phase, said the Rev. Myron Heckman, head pastor.
The architect is working on making the church ?more of a one-story,? which means expanding the footprint, Heckman said. The congregation purchased an additional half-acre next door to maintain or even add to the existing 110 parking spaces, he said.
Insurance will cover $2.7 million for the new building and Heckman estimates that a capital campaign will need to raise an additional $800,000.
He said he expects groundbreaking in the spring and the project to be completed a year later, in 2015.
Until then, the 300 members and adherents hold Sunday services at the Stony
Brook School, and various church groups meet in houses, libraries and other public spaces.
?We're making it work,? said Leslie Botsford, the church's Christian education
director.
Adam Finnegan, 29, of Brewster, who has been charged with burning the church at 3 a.m. Nov. 30, remains at Bridgewater State Hospital.
His parents have stated their son has a mental health condition.
He is due back in Barnstable Superior Court for a pretrial conference Sept.3, according to court records.
?Many of us are praying for him,? Day said. ?Our hearts are heavy for his family and for him. It would be nice to see him get the help he needs.?
As for the weeklong summer school being held outside, the kids didn't seem to mind that adjustment at all.
About 90 elementary-age children dove between raindrops to gather under
tents for crafts, Bible study and games on the last day of camp Friday.
The kids prefer being outside because they can spread out, said Judie Day, a camp volunteer and church member.
?It makes it seem more like a camp,? Heckman added.
