The nation's businesses hired more people than expected last month, according to a survey released Thursday that could augur well for Friday's crucial employment report.
Payrolls processor ADP reported that the private sector added 201,000 jobs in August, versus economists' expectations of 140,000 new jobs. August's figure was the highest since March, when the economy's job creating engine was moving at a faster pace before dropping into lower gear in the summer.
July's figure from the ADP National Employment Report was revised up to 173,000 from the previously reported 163,000.
Reuters contributed to this report.
