Cold and Flu Season With MS - Multiple Sclerosis Blog

The old adage goes; if you have a cold and see the doctor, you?ll be better in 14 days. If you don?t go to the doctor, it will take you two weeks to feel well. That is, of course, unless you have MS. Well, at least my MS.

Though I don?t come down with the common cold very often, the old rhinovirus came a calling this weekend. I?ll take responsibility for letting myself get run down with all of the events on my calendar last week. Couple them with the change in seasons, Seattle?s notoriously wet weather and lets just call it a touch of stress and anxiety and I was a cold waiting to happen.

I find, however, that when I do get a cold it?s nothing more than a two or three day ordeal anymore. On Friday night, after a very long day of shooting video for an upcoming series on MS and a goodbye dinner with dear friends, I felt that high in the back of your sinuses scratching that foretells a cold. By 3:00am on Saturday morning I was unable to sleep for the hot and cold flashes, constantly running nose and body aches. Sunday morning found me flat out but by the evening I was feeling on the mend.

Today, I?m up and about and all that remains is a bit of a deep voice and a bit of coughing. I guess having an immune system that is so revved up that it will ?eat? my brain tissue takes care of the common cold in record time.

This is also the season of flu shots and we all know that they are recommended for people living with chronic diseases such as multiple sclerosis. Many people wonder about that and you should ask your MS doc to make sure. Just don?t take the ?live?, nasal spray version of the vaccine. That?s not the one for us.

I?d like to take a moment to offer our collective thanks and well wishes to all of the folks at Everyday Health. The offices in NYC were closed due to flooding in and around the building. Many of the friends that help get the blog posted, your comments filed and our community promoted are having a tough go of it after the storm.

Please, if you have the means make a donation to the American Red Cross to help with the disaster relief. I?m told that everyone is alright from the staff but power is still out to many of their neighborhoods and they?re still trying to get our blogs posted.

All the best to the gang back in New York!

Wishing you and your family the best of health.

Cheers

Trevis
